Today’s devotional
#devotional

Romans 13:7 (NKJV): Render therefore to all their due; taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.

I have talked about wrestling with some passages in the Bible. This whole section in Romans 13 is one I continually wrestle with. I grew up with a very skeptical view of power. Over my 60 years, I have not seen much to dispel my skepticism of people who seek out power. It has been my experience that the people who seek out positions of power over other people rarely do it for altruistic reasons. Most of the people seeking out power do so to fulfill their desires and lusts. They very rarely do it to help others out. So, when Paul starts talking about those people in power like they are ordained by God to be in power, I have a difficult time believing Paul. I have seen too many people in power that were never going to be honoring to God. I have seen too many people in power that acted the exact opposite of the way Jesus acts in our lives. I have seen too many people in power that denied that power of the Holy Spirit. So, what does this verse mean to me? Over the years, I have come to believe that Paul is not really talking about those in power, but instead he is talking to us that live under that power. Are we doing the right thing in our lives? Are we followers of Jesus living lives that show Jesus is real? Are we followers of Jesus living lives that demonstrate the love and mercy of God? There is the idea that we do not willfully break the laws of the land with live in, since we are called to live lives that demonstrate integrity. Yet, we have to be careful and not blindly follow rules that are designed to produce outcomes that go against the will of God. Like I said, it is a wrestling act with this passage. Today, may we each live lives that show that the agape love of Christ Jesus is real.

Why did Nineveh repent so quickly at Jonah’s preaching?

Because they had already heard what happened to him.
It was a sign that God had sent him.

Jesus points to the same kind of sign —
His death and resurrection.

Cross: cost met. Crown: death undone. Mercy throne: door still open.

Three objects. The whole arc. Always Be.

What do Einstein and the Jehovah's Witnesses have in common?

When the data doesn’t fit the preferred conclusion…
some people introduce a “fudge factor.”

It happened with Einstein.
It happens with the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Hebrews 13:6 (NKJV): So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

There is great comfort in knowing that God is our helper. There is great security in knowing that Jesus will help us. There is great love in the Holy Spirit being there with us and for us. It makes me wonder why so often that I still keep saying “I can do it on my own”. I keep wondering why that two-year old in me still keeps popping up his head and stubbornness. Why do I keep wandering around this life thinking that I can handle everything on my own? Why do I keep living a life that pretends it is strong enough to handle everything? Why do I keep living my life thinking that being solo is better than being in community? If the Lord is truly my helper, why do I not let Jesus help me? If the LORD is truly my helper, why do I ignore the presence and promptings of the Holy Spirit? I think some days that I am too stubborn for my own good. I think that I need to more fully learn what it means to trust in the Lord. I need to more fully learn what it means to obey Jesus. I need to more fully learn what it means to let the agape love of Jesus to be my guide and my strength. Today, may we all learn to live more fully in obeying and trusting in Jesus.

It’s not how you start, but how you finish!

2 Timothy 4:
Demas started strong… then deserted Paul because he loved this life.
Mark started weak… then became useful to Paul.

Your past doesn’t have to define your finish.

Some say the Bible is only “inspiring,” written by fallible men.

Paul says it is God-breathed.

That difference changes everything about its authority in our lives.

We love to add requirements to salvation:
“Believe in Jesus… and do this… and avoid that…”

Paul’s answer in Romans 4:
Abraham was accepted by faith alone.

Still true today.

Sacrifice.
Priority.
Endurance.

That’s the cost of following Jesus in Luke 9 —
and it looks a lot like the vows we make in marriage.

Are we ready to say “I do”?
