A great blue heron jumps out of the water after an unsuccessful dive for a fish at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical color photograph, a great blue heron fills the frame in left profile as it leaps from the water after emerging from an unsuccessful dive. The heron has landed on a branch protruding from a submerged tree, with concentric rings spreading across the water beneath it where it had just emerged. The entire foreground and background are filled with the pond’s surface, creating a simple, immersive setting that emphasizes the heron’s movement and the moment captured.

A beautiful moment of a great blue heron using a wetland habitat so vital to its survival.

Breeding males are entirely blue with a slightly darker head. Females are plain brown with a whitish throat, bluish tail, and faint streaks on the underparts. Breeds in shrubby areas at the edge of forests and fields. Males often sing from a high exposed perch. Winters mainly in Middle America and the Caribbean, where it frequently gathers in flocks in weedy fields. Females can be very difficult to distinguish from Lazuli Bunting, although their range doesn't overlap much. Indigo usually shows more streaking on the underparts; also note fainter wingbars, duller breast, and more contrasting whitish throat.

A double-crested cormorant dries its wings at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

A double-crested cormorant dries its wings at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this horizontal color photograph, a double-crested cormorant perches on a tree branch jutting out of the water from a partially submerged tree in the left half of the frame.
Seen from behind with its head in left profile, the cormorant spreads its wings wide, drying them after diving underwater in search of fish.

Rippled pond water stretches across the image, reflecting the blue sky overhead with scattered clouds. Tangled around the tree branch near the center are fishing line and a couple of discarded fishing lures; one bright orange and the other a blue fish-shaped lure covered in white residue.

In just a week or so, this perch will be underwater again as the city continues filling the pond following an 18-month construction project. The St. Vrain Resiliency Project widened and improved the creek bank to increase its capacity to handle floodwaters.

A beautiful moment of a double-crested cormorant drying its wings in the wetland environment so vital to its survival.

A Male House Sparrow sits on a wall, left side towards the camera against a clear blue background. It is holding an insect in its beak - which can be identified as a Lacewing. The ambience is sunny and the sparrow's feather patterns are clearly delineated.

🪶 Rob has chosen #WingsOpenNotFlying as #BirdOfTheDay theme; birds with their wing open when not flying

Alternative is #Blue, birds with blue in their plumage

- I’ll go alt with a Blue Tit perched on a small branch in shade

#birdphotography
#ECK #birds #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #Stunday

A Blue Tit perched on a small, diagonal willow branch, which comes from the bottom right of the shot and ends in the upper left hand corner. The bird is right of centre of the shot, facing the camera with its head turned to the right so the right side of its head is shown.
The bird has a bright blue crown on its head, its cheeks are white with a black/blue border and eye stripe as well as a line under its short bill. Its underbelly is lemon yellow and its back is green with blue on the wings and tail. Its feet are a bluish grey.
The light on the bird is muted a bit but there is still a shadow of a small branch visible down the centre of the bird. There are three other, out of focus branches in the back ground in the top left, and two towards the bottom right. All follow the direction of the branch the bird is in, more or less.
The background is out of focus grass and vegetation, giving a green and white hue.

Blue Tit, perfectly perched against a bright blue sky.

A Eurasian blue tit perches on a branch of a leafy tree against a clear, bright blue sky. The small bird has a distinctive blue cap, a white face with a dark line through its eyes, and a vibrant yellow chest. It is looking directly forward at the camera with a sharp, alert expression. Autumnal yellow leaves are scattered among the green foliage.
