It's #BannedBooksWeek!

A handful of people shouldn't be allowed to dictate what the rest of us can read! Organized groups have used fear and disinformation to silence stories & remove books from libraries, schools, & bookstores. Why can’t they just let books be? bannedbooksweek.org/let-freedom-...

The theme for #BannedBooksWeek 2026 (October 4-10) is “Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read.”

Book bans are certainly not a new phenomenon; people have challenged or banned books since the beginning of the written word.

Help the fight against banned books!

In Chicago at ALA this summer I had a chance to share my thoughts on banned books from the @bannedbooksweek.bsky.social big chair.

Can you tell I was nervous?! Ha!

Good guess! But also it is #bannedbooksweek, so interesting to reflect on it having been suppressed at one time and make sure we watch for and defend against that here and now.

It's not remotely the same, but the #BannedBooksWeek posts have reminded me of the time the church book shop in my town wouldn't stock my Old Testament Space Opera.
Presumably because of all the sex, drugs, and violence.
In hindsight maybe I shouldn't have followed the source material so closely...

Fahrenheit 451 is a great book. I'd encourage anyone to read it. #BannedBooksWeek #GreatReads

#QOTD for October 8, 2026, is from #BannedBookClub by #KimHyunSook, #KoHyung-Ju, and #RyanEstrada in honor of #BannedBooksWeek “Do they ban books because they see danger in their authors, or because they see themselves in their villains?"

Carol Swain's brilliant graphic novel Gast is about a young girl's quest to uncover the life of a reclusive, cross-dressing Welsh farmer who committed suicide.

For many students, families, educators, librarians, and school districts, book banning is a new normal.

Fight back! Buy a banned book. Read. Pass it on.

For #bannedbooksweek here's a piece of censorship history: "the first English prose pornography" Fanny Hill. Upon publication in 1748 the author and publisher were arrested for "corrupting the King's subjects". Pirate editions circulated widely, including the Library's 1888 Paris edition, pictured.

A close up photograph of the title page of an 1888 Paris Edition of Fanny Hill printed in red and black ink with a small engraving, London Library cataloguing marks, and impressions from the following pages.

For #BannedBooksWeek we’re highlighting Reading Wars by Don Herzog 📚

From Reformation England to contemporary book bans, Herzog explores the long history of attempts to control who can read and what they can read, and what this reveals about equality and freedom.
