Someone came onto one of my bookish LinkedIn posts just to comment 'books are cheap crap.'

And listen. I know this person is a troll. And I know not to feed the trolls.

But no one said not to kick the trolls' arses. Hold my books!

Similes here, with a crocodile chase and Peter creating a new spell
(Scene hasn’t been edited yet so I expect it to be bad)
#WritingCommunity

An idea came to his head! Tinkerbell new spells came when people needed them most. Might as well see if it was true. Peter began sucking in the air, as if he was sucking on a straw. Jets of water flooded is mouth and filled his cheeks. The crocodile looked confused at Peter’s, he smirked back with cheeks full of water. In a large burst, the water shot from his mouth like a cannonball! The jet of water hit the crocodile’s snout causing the creature to swi away.
The spell worked, now it was time to fly! Peter gripped the rope, despite the burning, and pulled himself closer to Zephyr. The bird looked back and glared, “Don’t you ever give up, boy?”

Word of the day is territory, which I don’t have so it’s ✨vibes✨
From Making Utopia
-Michael shows some territories across the Wastes. They also marked gang patrols(he doesn’t want to deal with them)
#WritingCommunity

“In short, no way in hell are we going anywhere near there,” Michael interjected. “Don’t worry.” He looked over the map of the Wastes and pointed out all the areas they had marked. From local farms they traded with, settlements similar to Gideon in varying sizes and tech, and even budding communities trying to survive. The one Michael was taking her to didn't seem that far. It looked northwest of Gideon. She also asked about areas with black lines over them.
“Those are where certain gangs patrol; we try our best to avoid them. They’re either looking for someone to steal from or a firefight. I really don’t have time for either.”

Hope there's a list of these "international authors' organizations" and "other creative [HA!] industry bodies" there so we all know who to avoid in future. #WritingCommunity

Bertram discovers a strange pack with wings in Eldritch's tower and tries to use it to fly.

🦇

#WIPsnips #writingprompts #writesky #writingcommunity

“I tried it myself once, you know,” a voice said suddenly. Eldritch.
Feeling his face redden, Bert got to his feet quickly. “I didn’t break it, I swear. Just taking a break.” Even as he said the words, he knew they were foolish.
“Relax, Bertram.” The wizard had a smile cracking on his face. “It’s not for flight, but for some other purpose. I tracked it down as belonging to the old King Wyrmblessed’s great-grandfather. Some level of great anyway. I never figured out the purpose, but the man was the first Wyrmblessed in the line. Before that the royals here were actually named Wyrmguard rather than Wyrmblessed. Guard certainly has a different connotation than blessed, eh boy?”
Bert considered this as he removed the pack and wings from his back. “Interesting. I never knew the family had a different name.”
“Oh, all of us do. My family name was Smith, as my father was a blacksmith. Lorne is the name we give all our youth without parents. What was your family name before you lost your mother and father?”
“Sawyer, my father and his father both worked in the woods.”
Eldritch nodded. “Sawyer. One who uses a saw. Smith. One who uses a smith to work metal. Wise. One who is, well, wise. Apparently. Lorne. One who is alone.” He looked at Bert. “Not much compared to one who is blessed by a dragon, eh?”
Bert smacked his forehead. “Of course! A wyrm is just a fancy old name for a dragon!”
Eldritch nodded sagely. “Wyrmgate is the name of our town and it’s clear why. We are the closest town to dragon territory in the entire nation. You can learn a lot through names. Wyrmgate and Wyrmguard suggest a town possibly built to defend against dragon attacks, or at least keep them from getting further into the countryside...”
“While Wyrmblessed,” Bert continued, “suggests being actually helped or chosen for acknowledgment by the dragons. How interesting!”
“You have a sharp mind, Bert.”

I posted this snip a couple weeks back, but it bears revisiting. Our dubious heroes encounter an old flame of Quinceberry's, in "Laughter of the Hunted Gods," my philosophical godpunk WIP.

She squinted at Boden. “You smell funny.”
“It’s the laudanum.” Quinceberry sniffed imaginary powder off the back of his finger. “Or the cocaine, they smell so much alike to me.”
“You,” she said to him, “smell funnier. Have you been marking your territory again?”
Quinceberry chuckled. “Oh, Hazine, I’ve missed your wit.”
“Wasn’t joking,” she said. “How dare you come back here?”

#WIPSnips The word for October 14 is TERRITORY

NOMARA is a novel that explores all kinds of "territory," especially sexual and political. This snip shows Kate realizing that she's treading in dangerous territory between her upbringing and that of the nomari.
#WritingCommunity #WriteSky #SFF

Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. Snip shows Kate talking with a native human woman who is the leader of her craft house, or kumbh, about human-nomari sexual negotiations:

Kurvinda looked distressed. “I want Yuvan to be happy. I want that if he must be loved by queens, that he should be loved by one who will treat him gently. Yuvan has a gentle beauty, yes, but nothing that is not found in a hundred others. And his kumbh is not so powerful as to attract those who would want major alliances.”
Kate recognized that she faced what Concordat social scientists might loosely term a socio-cultural definition complex. She flitted in alien territory on the edges of a cultural warp seam where one miscalculation, one misinterpretation could conceivably lead to disaster. Very real dangers existed within this new realm of kumbhs and kumbh alliances.
Kate decided to take what had so far been her safest course, that of befuddled observer. “Kumbhara,” she protested, “Please explain. Must the man go to a queen? Why not stay with his kumbh, his own people? Isn’t he allowed to say no?”
Kurvinda bowed her head. “How can he? Here in Eshuun alone, the nomari outnumber us by many hundreds of thousands. What a queen wants, a queen can take, so long as she does not infringe on the wants of another queen more dominant than she. It has always been so. Long ago, our people were slaves, and our young men were taken freely. Now the kumbhs, not queens, are the keepers of men. We hold our husbands and sons safe from the nom, give them the freedom of their work and the joy of kindred, and arrange suitable queen matings of a few in exchange for alliances that ensure the safety of all.”

The writing sits on the thing it's about. A person's page holds the essay. The line between two of them holds the sentence saying why that link is there, with room for 15,000 characters. A note about a landfall both companies claim sits on that bit of map.

#writingcommunity #worldbuilding

An entity page for a person: four tags, a visibility state, a badge saying she is on three relationship maps, a written biography with a pulled quote and a numbered three book arc, and a map context panel beside it with a depth slider and a three node graph.A page for a single relationship: a source entity, an EMPLOYS type badge carrying its own definition about paying a wage and directing work, and a target entity, then unset begins and ends fields, a rich text note giving the reason for the link with a counter reading 98 of 15000 characters, and the start of a Visibility section.A relationship map with written annotations pinned beside the nodes they discuss, one of them a card titled Two accounts, one landfall, each several sentences long, among named nodes and typed edges, with a leader arrow pointing up at the node one of them is about.

Niot constantly compares himself to the image of an ideal knight, tripping over himself over and over to try to match it perfectly.

Wolfstanus compares himself to his father, never wishing to become him, in a way that will cause tension soon within their story.
