The Salvation Army itself identifies conflicts in 67 communities during that period.

George Head, the landlord of the Salvation Army barracks and a Salvation Army supporter, responded with a revolver, firing at the attackers and wounding several people.
@emory-f8.bsky.socialSalvationists were pelted with rotten eggs, flour, stones, brickbats, paint, and other missiles.
Flags were torn down, musical instruments were damaged, meeting places were attacked, and individual Salvationists were beaten.
@emory-f8.bsky.socialIf the Salvation Army had uniforms and badges, the Skeletons had their own.
If the Salvationists carried religious banners, Skeletons marched beneath black banners displaying skulls, crossbones, skeletons, coffins, rats, and devils.
@emory-f8.bsky.socialHowever, their processions, attacks on drinking culture, and determination to occupy public spaces were seen as intrusive and provocative to those opposed to their beliefs.
Skeleton groups began appearing and constructed themselves as grotesque parodies of the Salvation Army.
@emory-f8.bsky.socialSalvationists deliberately took their religion into the streets, marching in military-style uniforms, playing brass instruments, singing hymns, preaching in public, and campaigning aggressively against alcohol, gambling, tobacco, and other activities they considered sinful.
