“They tipped you off!” he shouted as his programming began its nasty work on Elm’s ship. “Enlighten told you we were here!” Elm had been halfway through a growled threat, but clearly she couldn’t help but enjoy his dismay. “Yeah,” she said. “We’re a big fucking family, and they were happy to help us out. You been rocking the Rockhaven, little man? They were very eager to… Wait. What the fuck are you up to?” He didn’t bother to answer. Theonova’s fusion reactor was an old model, far behind on its inspection. The slug was ancient, a lead case of radioactive material as old as sin. He didn’t need much effort at all to begin the process of heating up its redundant systems in preparation for a meltdown. It asked him where all the heat was supposed to go, and he ignored it. Alarms began to blare in the ship’s diagnostics, and he let them sing with grim satisfaction. “I said, what the fuck are you playing at?” Elm demanded, sighting herself down the crossbow. “If I find out you’ve been-…!” “Stop that!”

Marcus only had a moment to wonder, as the sound of applause suddenly rushed over him. He stared out, and Rune with him, and met the exuberant eyes of one hundred people. He knew them all, in a way. They were all of them familiar. He looked to Rune with a breathless smile, and she smiled back. She looked radiant in her white dress. She’d always had that thing, she’d just never worn it. Rune laughed joyously as she stepped forward and planted her lips on his. The cheering reached fever pitch. And then they exploded.
