The chamber that they were forced into was comfortably spaced and could fit many people within. Along the furthest wall were nine thrones, with the largest in the center. Each one was accented with gold and were cushioned with cotton and leather. The largest of the seats had jewels decorating the top. Tokonus could only assume that this would be Nazhe’s seat and the main individual that he would address. Jniaja nearly glided across the floor to rest in her seat, one of the two closest to Nazhe. It did not take long for each of the seats to be taken up by Zhaly and the others that Tokonus had observed before. Many of them were women, but one male of each race was present. Last to arrive was Nazhe himself. The leader of the city's face was cold and sharp. His body was chiseled and his posture was straight. His scales were a smokey brown color, and a furred mane stitched itself from one shoulder down to his breast and then back up to the opposing shoulder. His stride was slow, deliberate, and powerful. Each person bowed their heads as he took the steps to his seat, and Tokonus did not feel as though he had any other choice but to do the same. “Mama stone be calling I and I family ‘ere before a stranger. One come wit our broda and wit pain on da lips," Nazhe spoke with a stern tone. “Broda Aesus, come wit it. Speak on the step of it for I.”

Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. Snip shows Kharys as a captive child being raised by the nomari for eventual service to their Queen. The nomari use human men for sex and companionship. Resigned that he was safe, Kharys allowed them to teach him their ways. Their language became his own, their strangenesses became familiar. Only he was always alien, a stranger, isolated behind walls, allowed to go abroad only if he was concealed by layers of silk and veils of gauze, with spear-carrying warriors to guard him—a thing that could see and hear and think, that others must never see, or hear, or think about. After a time, he learned to regard the hated garments as a hiding place. Through his veils he observed the nomari and their world as if in a dream. They were shadows, living in a shadow world, and he alone was real. Only his own chambers, where he was allowed to walk unveiled, had harsh, clear lines and hard color. Greater passing followed the lesser, three moons sailing the river of stars, stringing themselves into a necklace of years. Kharys learned to look for the beautiful, older Queen, recognizing that she had become his mistress. He wanted to ask her why she kept him like this, apart, for no apparent purpose. But whenever she visited the secluded chambers that were his, he found his tongue rendered mute by the same worshipful silence that made his keepers bow away, and the golden Queen of the Others would leave him as she had found him, without answers. One thing only would she do, and that was to kiss him, always gently, on the lips.

Snippet from Flowers and Entomology: "Sexual cannibalism?" Zinnian made a face. Expressions were a good way to decipher a human's feelings, and this human was uncomfortable. Whispers said, "The females don't eat the whole male. Just the head." "Uhhh…" Zinnian almost spilled his cup of tea. Whispers explained, "We're going to put a collar on the male." "Kinky," remarked the human. Kinky was a concept that dryads didn't share with animals. Despite rumors to the contrary, sharing pollen was better for the plants a dryad's seed stone had bonded to. To procreate, Whispers kind actually... Whispers' inner monologue was interrupted when Sylvia asked Zinnian, "Who made your camera?" Zinnian frowned, but he found a smile before answering. "I should admit now that I broke up with Olivia. My boss. Well, former boss I suppose. I don't think she'll want me wandering the tunnels now." "I'm sorry to hear that," Sylvia softly said. "Does anyone else make cameras? A watchmaker perhaps?" "I'm not sure," Zinnian replied. Whispers had already gone to the kitchen to grab crackers and bright red jelly. He then scuttled back into the living room and set the treats down. "Eat," Whispers demanded. Scooping up some jelly, Zinnian had to ask, "Is this prickly pear?" "Of course not! I won't bear fruit for another sixty days. It's strawberry," Whispers declared. "I'll deliver some next door when they're ripe." Sylvia happily tried some. Zinnian sighed and took a bite. After swallowing, he said, "It's a little weird you feed people your body parts." "I must feed the pears to something! Otherwise, they simply fall off. I can't eat them all." Something he said unnerved his human guest again. At least Sylvia was happily munching away at crackers.
