Now, as I said, this is indeed what happens with our altricial nature. We have a secondary altriciality, which means we are born more helpless and premature than any other species. We are only half-ready for life at birth. We are half-borns, essentially — only half ready for life at birth ... relative to other species. What this means is that there is a huge gulf between us and all other species, all other planetmates, in all things ... beginning with the way we view Reality. For humans, more than any other species, see Reality through a fog of trauma, stress, pain, neurosis, and ten- sion unlike anything known to other beings. We are the suffering species; we are the ones uniquely commissioned to forget through trauma and then learn again through pain ... bringing to Reality whatever unique perspective, or Experience, implicated in that. Yet this feeling of irritation from the prenatal environment we project additionally onto those in our social environment, and we feel them to be irritating, as well. We call them “dirty” Jews, or hippies, or the homeless. We see them as “lazy” Blacks or gypsies — i.e., a placenta that is not doing its job to remove a toxic buildup. We throw the same kind of prenatal revulsion onto witches. Historically, they were thought to be “polluting” the cultural environment with their dangerous and “burning” — for these ideas were associated with the demonic and hell — beliefs and practices. And we have submitted all these groups to the burning — through immolation at the stake, through burning in Nazi ovens or in heaps at the time of pogroms, and through KKK attacks on and the burning, hanging, and tar-and-feathering of Blacks in America. Tar and feathering, incidentally, is a pretty good metaphor for the feelings of this time of being surrounded by toxic and uncomfortably irritating-burning elements from which there is no escape. More innocently, and commonly, it is experienced as ADHD and ADD — Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorders — wherein constant irritations within the body keep one from being able to think and concentrate clearly. Well, if you followed all that, you would see that such groups can be continually broken down ... can be infinitely broken down, you will soon see ... into even smaller subgroups. Neighborhoods can be broken down into separate family cultures, for example. And where from there? Well, we see that, yes, it is true, each and every individual can her- or himself be considered a culture, in that there are understandings, procedures, ways of thinking, and all the rest that are not held in common with anyone else at all but are unique to each individual. That is often referred to as personality, a person’s unique personality, but it goes beyond that to unique facts of each individual that are not even, by other individuals, observable! The difference between individual culture and personality is a matter of emphasis in that individual culture pertains to patterns, realities, facts, and ways of looking at or construing the world primarily from the perspective of the individual, whereas personality usually applies to those things as observed, to the extent they are observed, and referred to by others. Nevertheless, one might say culture, as it pertains to groups and societies, reduced to its foundation, is simply another way of referring to individual psychologies, or personalities, but doing it cumulatively. Culture is collective psychology, in a sense.
No doubt, activities such as gymnastics, flying, and skydiving are reactions to these uncomfortable feelings. Such pastimes are attempts to run away from the discomfort of entrapment and no-exit — which feelings continue to plague us as adults, as we ever re-create that which we did not integrate and “process” at the time of initially experiencing it — which claustrophobic-like feelings superseded and overlaid the earlier bliss state. Thus, we seek to re-create and re-stimulate those earlier blissful feelings in us through adult experiences of weightlessness, swimming, dancing, surfing, hot tubbing. I need to add loving sexuality to that — particularly in its re-stimulating blissful memories of re-union with an Other who is all-accepting, all-embracing, and eminently kind. I need to include also the seduction of the experience of being religiously reborn.5 I cannot leave the topic of floating without pointing to the most obvious and frequent activity of humans to re-create the weightless experience of BPM I — swimming. Being in water simulates the gravity- free state of our earliest life. It is one of the commonest activities of humans. Naturally, in that same category would be bathing. Even our depictions of release from the constraints of physical existence are viewed through this BPM I veil of blissful weightlessness — whether it is the evangelical Christian idea of “the rapture,” where people… 46. Sociopathy And with this we have the achievement of the heights of “civilization” — the sociopath. All human “evolution,” characterized as it is by increasing control of everything and anyone around, reaches its fruition in the creation of a personality without the ability to empathize, which enables a human to kill, steal, manipulate, bully, destroy the environment, kill off species, and dominate without conscience or remorse — all in the service of narcissistic desires and greed. The sociopath is the logical and inevitable omega point of man’s descent from Nature. Commiserations to Teilhard de Chardin for having gotten it backward, regarding his Omega Point, under the nearly unbreakable spell of the overweening anthropocentrism which arose in tandem to such sociopathy, sharing many of its qualities. Indeed, while this evolutionary “advance” — sociopathy — came into play with civilization, especially among elites and Controllers, these tendencies can be seen to characterize and be at play in the majority of human personalities at this time in history. While mostly recognizing these traits in their most extreme form, most humans will fail to see the reflections of them in their own selves. Unfeeling, insensitive, greedy, narcissistic, anthropocentric, and self-centered people will not know they are that way. And seeing everyone around them as much the same, they will hardly know it can be any different. This is where we are today and why we need to return to our primal personalities, our most authentic identities and ways of being, in tune with Nature and the Divine. THE DESCENTS OF MAN Page 21
Sympathy for the Bedeviled Simply look at the lives of these people and imagine those multitudes and the incredible pain, utter lovelessness, utterly miserable and confused minds they carry as adults. Then think beyond them to the many-fold more of the masses who have similar but lesser versions of lives and experiences as the “enraptured.” Add to that the incredible power of fear ... not only fear; but fear that has, well, demonically, been projected into the biggest expanse existing in the universe — that of the imagination and that of the Unknown, combined. If you can get a sense of that fear, even a small part, you will realize the utter terror that awakens them, that is there in the middle of the night as they approach consciousness, and which, like a squirming frog, inhabits, nay, becomes the daytime brain and thoughts of these people, and motivates them to do anything, anything at all, that might promise a snippet of relief. You will see that they believe in hell because they in fact live lives that are the closest things in existence to actual hells. Yet aware of the criticism that their very own values, taken to the Yuppie extremes, was generating in the independent press, as well as the negative publicity there about the cocaine use of the Yuppies, the World-War-Two Generation saw an opportunity not only to defeat but also to “get back” at their opponents, the Sixties Generation, by ridiculing them. The Sixties Generation had of course incurred the wrath of the WWII Generation by opposing and confronting them on the Vietnam War in sometimes harsh and hostile ways. As for the Yuppies who came on the scene after the Sixties Generation, in the predominant World-War-Two Generation fashion of scapegoating — which is the accompaniment of denial and ignoring the fact Yuppies expressed the values the WWII Gen had inculcated in them — the WWII Gen targeted their younger Yuppie clones from the outset. Especially the older generation directed their ire at the cocaine use of the time. The Yuppies, with their cocaine use, were portrayed in the WWII- Generation-paid-for media as former Sixties hippies who had simply grown older but — consistent with their alleged “narcissism” — were still selfish, only now, materially so.
