The long term solution must be to acquire and create large new parks in rural areas. We need about 500,000 acres of new public lands for nonmotorized outdoor recreation, and we need to restore these landscapes to be attractive alternatives to currently popular public lands. #parkchat

The short term solution is obvious: strictly limit parking to designated sites, and reduce the quantity of parking to a level where park trails will not be overburdened. This needs to be balanced to account for the number of visitors arriving by bus. #parkchat

Even on a weekday in October, the parking lots and road shoulders were packed to overflowing. It filled up alarmingly early, and the fact is that there are just too many people. I have never seen the park as bad as it has been this summer. Something has to change.

The condition of the trails at Paradise in Mt. Rainier National Park shocked me today. Many portions of trail in the area now have as many as three parallel paths, with vast swathes of meadow being trampled into oblivion.

We spent most of our time at Valentine, #Nebraska at Smith Falls State Park. The falls at the Park were pretty incredible at 63’ #ParkChat Easy hike too.

I like that CA State Parks have amended their reservations to try to prevent no-shows and last minute cancellations that make it impossible for others to enjoy their parks. I wonder about that 3 no-shows rule, and how it will be enforced. #ParkChat www.kqed.org/news/1209781...

Bit of a stretch, maybe, we were meeting up w relatives at Mare Island Brewing located in an old coal shed at the closed Mare Island Naval Shipyard in CA last May. Historic ships were moored at near the brewery, we realized they were temp. moored NPS exhibits & flying an NPS flag #parkchat
