I hear it’s #fossilfriday and we recently went to Florida, mostly to look for fossils. (Yep, got some shark teeth.) We did some beach combing in between scheduled activities and found these lovely little oysters.

Four small (1-2 cm) oyster fossils on a black fabric background. One has a barnacle, another has a clam and another half oyster shell on it.

What did Neolithic people think these were? 🤔

This is a fossil sea urchin from 90 million years ago, found in the Neolithic flint mines of Grimes Graves in Norfolk

The ancient miners must have had stories about how all this sealife got there!

#fossilfriday A cluster of large cockles, Clinocardium meekianum, in a sandy concretion from the Purisima Formation in Santa Cruz, California. Early Pliocene, ~4-5 myo. Each cockle is about 6-8 cm in diameter. 🦑🦖🧪

A large, ~40 cm wide light gray rock broken in half, exposing a cluster of five large articulated fossil cockle shells. The fossil shells are white with some light tan coloring in spots.

What time is it? It’s #Cheliceratime & #Fossilfriday !

Today I wanted to talk about how pseudoscorpions use larger animals as taxis, and that this behavior is known from multiple fossil examples!

Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next Cheliceratime!

Some #FossilFriday news

@paleontologizing.bsky.socialSep 11, 2026, 3:05 PM

For this week's #FossilFriday, here's an unpolished field photo of the thumb claw of Trierarchuncus, held in the hand of @denverfowler.bsky.social on the day of its discovery by Jack Wilson, 15 July 2015.

This claw would become the first catalogued specimen in the Badlands Dinosaur Museum (BDM 001)

Crummy, let's-snap-a-quick-one photo of the claw, with the articular end facing the viewer and the tip broken as it was found, in Denver's hand. Denver's field pack is open on the ground on the other side of the frame, with aluminum foil and other field implements peeking out

For #FossilFriday, here's some 2019 #paleoart of Deinonychus subduing a juvenile Sauroposeidon using the Raptor Prey Restraint (RPR) model of dromaeosaur predation: grabbing prey with taloned feet, pinning it down with its body weight, and then eating it alive. Just like modern raptors, then.

A yellowish feathered predatory dinosaur has leapt onto the back of a small long-necked dinosaur, forcing it roughly to the ground. It has grasped the back of the herbivore with taloned feet, and holds its wings out for stability. Dust swirls around them as they wrestle.

It’s #taphonomy time! 🦴

A LOT can happen between death and discovery, so understanding taphonomy is a great paleo detective skill to have 🔍💪

Head to bit.ly/ichthyosaur-jaw & tune in next week for another #FossilFriday from the Paleo Research Institute 👉

Happy #FossilFriday! New research on Priohybodus arambourgi reveals a surprising evolutionary story: despite the advanced serrated teeth, the internal dental structure remained conservative. Thin enameloid may signal generalist feeding.
