God's love predates the stars. You weren't loved after you arrived — you were loved before there was anything to arrive into. That's not comfort. That's the shape of reality.

An illustration in inkwork with green and light purple wax pigment, of a plump, feminine-presenting gnome stepping into a dark forest space, turning back to look over her shoulder and grin at the viewer. Large faerie wings manifest at her back from a spiral there, a star with a smaller spiral hangs above her in the darkness, and the foliage and shrubbery around her is filled with all manner of other fae beings, all looking upon her progress with wonder, pride and hope.

Proverb 23:4 (NKJV): Do not overwork to be rich; because of your own understanding, cease.

The Hebrew word that is translated “overwork” means “to gasp”. It implies to be exhausted. In the KJV, it is translated “weary” and “labor” almost equally. I do not know about you, but I was taught a work ethic that did not really allow for time off. Maybe two weeks at the end of the year for a trip to Florida, but mostly I was taught that work took priority over everything else. I tried not to learn that lesson, but I found myself with a wife and three children, so I bought into the lie that I had to constantly work all the time to support us. My mother tried to preach a different work ethic to me. My children occasionally voiced their displeasure in my constant work. Unfortunately, it took me years to learn balance in my life. It took a long time to figure out that my presence with my family was more important than all that work. I still have to monitor myself and work. I still have to make sure that I prioritize things that are important to the LORD my God. I have to watch over myself to make sure that I am choosing the things the LORD has called me to and not always choosing the things I lust after. I have slowly come to realize that stuff is not what makes us rich. What makes us rich is a deep faith in the LORD our God and the relationships with other people we build along the path of life. Today may we learn to not exhaust ourselves and instead rely on the love and strength of the LORD our God.

One man washed out early.
Another (Demas) started strong and later deserted.

Mark recovered.
Demas drifted.

How you finish matters more than how you start.

Not every division is sinful.

Sometimes faithful people with different strengths
simply cannot continue together —
and God still advances His work through both.

Paul & Barnabas prove it.

A Pivotal Council in the Early Church (Acts 15)

Some said: “Unless you are circumcised… you cannot be saved.”

Peter’s reply:
“We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the special favor of the Lord Jesus.”

Faith alone
Grace alone

What is Baptism?

To be baptized into Christ = to be united with Christ.

That’s the heart of Romans 6.

The spiritual reality happens at faith.
The water is the outward sign of that new identity.

Is it immoral to be wealthy?

Luke 12: Jesus calls the rich man a fool —
not because he was rich,
but because he stored up earthly wealth
without a rich relationship with God.

Greed is the problem.
Not wealth itself.

Romans 8 doesn't say God's love is patient. It says nothing can separate you from it. That's not comfort. That's a boundary nothing crosses. #AlwaysBe

Today’s devotional

Romans 13:7 (NKJV): Render therefore to all their due; taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.

I have talked about wrestling with some passages in the Bible. This whole section in Romans 13 is one I continually wrestle with. I grew up with a very skeptical view of power. Over my 60 years, I have not seen much to dispel my skepticism of people who seek out power. It has been my experience that the people who seek out positions of power over other people rarely do it for altruistic reasons. Most of the people seeking out power do so to fulfill their desires and lusts. They very rarely do it to help others out. So, when Paul starts talking about those people in power like they are ordained by God to be in power, I have a difficult time believing Paul. I have seen too many people in power that were never going to be honoring to God. I have seen too many people in power that acted the exact opposite of the way Jesus acts in our lives. I have seen too many people in power that denied that power of the Holy Spirit. So, what does this verse mean to me? Over the years, I have come to believe that Paul is not really talking about those in power, but instead he is talking to us that live under that power. Are we doing the right thing in our lives? Are we followers of Jesus living lives that show Jesus is real? Are we followers of Jesus living lives that demonstrate the love and mercy of God? There is the idea that we do not willfully break the laws of the land with live in, since we are called to live lives that demonstrate integrity. Yet, we have to be careful and not blindly follow rules that are designed to produce outcomes that go against the will of God. Like I said, it is a wrestling act with this passage. Today, may we each live lives that show that the agape love of Christ Jesus is real.
