Death, rebirth
death, rebirth
death, rebirth the #pulse of the Earth

-Light After the Fall, available now on Amazon!
#WIPsnips #witchsky

Babies were born and grew shriveled and old, true love blossomed and withered, monarchs rose to power and were destroyed. Tribes ascended and imploded, civilizations rose and fell. All of it in rhythm, the pulse of the Earth. Death, rebirth, death, rebirth, germinating and blooming and shedding and composting…

My heart pounded so hard, I could feel the vein in my neck pulsing and hoped she didn’t see it. She asked if her new Excel file made sense. I squinted at it, trying to find some way to act normal and like this was okay when it was yet more unnecessary garbage. #wipsnips

The agony pulsed up and down its prone, pathetic form, worsening for what felt like hours before the pain subsided again. The body could only lay there, sucking in deep, unsteady breaths, waiting for this nightmare to end.

The Body could only wince in pain as it realized just how much every part of it hurt. The agony pulsed up and down its prone, pathetic form, worsening for what felt like hours before the pain subsided again. The body could only lay there, sucking in deep, unsteady breaths, waiting for this nightmare to end.

Amidst the pain was an overwhelming sense of unbridled rage, coupled with dread and sorrow that sang as if it’d been struck like a tuning fork, the note cacophonous and unbearable. A desire to run, to scream, to cry, to thrash about and resist whatever hell had befallen it possessed its mind so deeply— yet it could not move. All the body could do was try to make sense of this pain, of the wrongs that had surely occurred, of the abandonment that had surely sunk serrated claws deep into its flesh. Indeed, its mind swam with these possibilities, and it longed to return to the world of the dead for just a little longer. Just until the pain abated…

And then it heard a sound.

New week, new words. Here’s a #WIPSnips for pulse.

Joe sets the paper aside. He manages to corral the kids out of the kitchen before he takes his place beside his wife and helps out, passing Kate a glass, a fork, a dish… "You know how I feel about this," he says. "It reflects poorly on me."

"Because you don’t believe in psychic phenomena, or because I’m dabbling in the dark arts of the satanic?" Her eyes meet his, her brow cocked just so.

"Anne has become a bad influence."

"And you're living in fear. In fear of losing votes."

"Josephine has a hold on the neck of this town. Unfortunately, because of it, she knows how to read its pulse."

From Book 2 of Resist. You all get to see Ferris lose his mind after the Circle captured Rollan.

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Quivering in the shadows of the Obsidian Sector, a soldier begged for his life. Unable to move as fear petrified him, he watched as his fellow servicemen rose from the ground without a pulse. Ferris’s vengeful eyes turned on him. Unable to control himself, the soldier began to blubber as did those before him. Like Ort’s men and the magistrates from centuries ago. Humans felt invincible until they realized there was a fate worse than death.
Five thralls surrounded Ferris as he licked the blood from the thin blade. Archaic, it still filled his body with euphoria to take blood directly from a body. The sixth thrall rose with a lumbering jolt. Clean and satisfied, Ferris was prepared to exact his revenge. If Rollan wasn’t alive, then everything would die. Last time Ferris held back. This time, he didn't want to.

#WIPSnips #amquerying #writesky #epicfantasy 💙📚 🪐📚

From my Epic Fantasy novel Demon’s Bargain. Kahyla sought refuge from an assassin on the ship Despard was guarding. Has she chosen the wrong man to trust?

A figure limped between snow-shrouded counting tables. “I know she’s up there,” said the man in the familiar clipped accent of Huxen. “Send her down and we can split the bounty.”
Kahyla cringed against the ribs of the ship’s wall as Despard rose to the top of the gangplank.
“What bounty? Why do you want her?” He drew two daggers and held them at his sides.
The ship’s rigging groaned as the wind pulsed down the river. Balanced on the narrow board, Despard tensed on flexed knees.
“A smaller haul for her location,” said the voice, crunching steps growing louder and closer. “Bigger payout for proof of kill on all three Tamrins.”
Kahyla scanned Despard’s face but could read nothing in the line of his moonlit jaw.
“You’d pay in advance?” said Despard.
Oh Parkith, how could she have misjudged Despard? So many evenings of quiet joy but now haggling over the price of betrayal? Where on the ship could she hide? To jump into the river to escape would be as certain to kill her as the assassin’s knife.
The board creaked as the man stepped on the bottom slat. “Don’t be foolish. I could only pay for the location bounty up front,” he said with a hypnotic purr. “But if you wait, the second payout is so much better. Decide how much money you want.”
“Kahyla decides,” Despard said quietly, his knife glinting as he twisted it and caught her eye.
Sleeping saints, what was he saying? Decide - this man’s life or hers?
She breathed cold air. A nod.
“No bed warmer on a cold night then,” Despard said loudly for the assassin to hear. He stepped off the ramp, leaving the path open. “Come and get her.”

Oh no I only have about 500 instances of 'pulse' in this VampireWIP lmao but here's one of my favorite instances of Roberto intimidating his employees. Being vampire sure helps maintain his power as a drug lord.
#WIPSnips

It’s early morning and the crew reports in, accounting for their earnings before departing for the day. I catch a scent on one of my corner guys.
“Arturo, wait,” I say, and he freezes. I walk over, and he begins to sweat. A few of the boys pause. Fear and curiosity fill the air.
Arturo remains motionless as I draw a small plastic baggie from his jacket pocket.
“What the fuck is this?” I ask.
“Sorry, I forgot I had it,” he answers, but his pulse says otherwise. I’m angry and insulted. My fangs descend.
“Be still,” I command him, rolling up his sleeve. He doesn’t move and couldn’t if he wanted to as I bite into his arm just below his wrist in front of everyone. I swallow once, twice, and then stop and raise his arm to show him the little puncture wounds.
“Think about this when you imagine stealing from me,” I tell him. Terror is plain on his face. “You’re fired.”
He staggers away, clutching his bleeding arm. I wipe my mouth, then hand the bag to Lisa. “Catalog that, please,” I tell her, and she nods obediently.

No More Mister Nice Guy - Chapter 17

After beating Poltergeist, Ethan and Purebred try to see if he's still alive or not.

#WIPSnips

“Oh god…” Purebred groaned. She turned away, and Ethan was worried she was going to start vomiting, but instead she just huddled up in a corner of the alleyway. Ethan leaned down and pressed his fingers to the side of the squashed man’s neck.

“Holy shit,” Ethan muttered in surprise. “He’s alive!”

“What?!” Like a dog smelling food, Purebred scrambled to her feet and bounded over to the two men. “He’s alive?!”

“Yup. Still got a pulse and everything. He must’ve used his powers to soften the blow…” Though that was all Poltergeist managed to do, seeing the damage his body suffered.

“So… what do we do now?” Poltergeist asked hesitantly. “We can’t just leave him here…”

“Says who?!” Ethan asked indignantly. The pain in his puncture wounds seemed to flare up as he glared at the werewolf. “He attacked us! Asshole deserves whatever happens to him!” Purebred said nothing, but the whimpers she let out made the villain think of an injured puppy. Her pathetic demeanor made Ethan want to lash out, but he couldn’t decide whether he should smack Purebred on the nose or cave in Poltergeist’s head.

For the #Sniptober day 12

No loose selfs, but 2 selfs as part of a longer word, in a snip only a few hours after the other one for the #WIPsnips, both part of the panic attack narrative when Pyra and Ronan arrive in Héva, the land where men don't exist...

‘Are you okay now?’ She asked, very careful. He seemed to be better indeed, but he was still a bit pale and shaky.
He sat up on his bed. ‘I think so. I’m so sorry.’
‘You are sorry? Why?’
‘I really screwed up, didn’t I?’
‘You? If there’s anyone who should be sorry, it’s me. It was me who put you through all this with my impulsive plans. It’s my fault we got on the aeroplane to her, and I took the risk to expose us to get help. I am the one to blame for everything. You are the victim of my horrible life choices.’
‘Don’t call it that. It just happened. And I was weak.’
She sat next to him and very carefully laid her arm on his shoulder.
‘Weak? You? You just had a heavy full-blown panic attack. Very understandable too if you suddenly find yourself in a country where men don’t officially exist, and that as a shy Nation boy…’
‘But it’s inexcusable. And now we’re locked up in this guesthouse thing. If I had had more self-control we might have been able to hide ourselves…’
‘Ah, I don’t think so, that wouldn’t have worked. This world is too strange for that. We don’t know the rules of anything here. I wouldn’t even know where we’d sleep or find food, or how to get a flight back. At least we have food and a place to sleep now, and they will do their best to get us back.’
‘If you look at it like that…’
‘And you know, a supposedly strong Nation man is the last thing I could use now to be honest. It would get us in much more trouble if you were an Alpha. You need to do your best to look like a harmless kid who’s impressed by their culture, not a masculine macho boy who enjoys his morning drill exercises while fantasising about killing Nation enemies. Harmless is really what we need to go for.’
His breath was a lot calmer now, so she took her arm away and jumped off the bed, in the direction of the bookshelf.
‘So, what do we have here? I suppose we’ll have a lot of time to waste here before we get home.’

The other uses of pulse were during NSFW parts, so you get this. The full scene was a turning point in the story from "we're cool phantom thieves!" to "wtf do you mean we might all die?"

I'm sure I've posted this snippet before, but it fits the prompt so...

*Mariner meets the DiNA on his return to Pirate's Gap

It stood in the shadows of the cavern, just outside the opened tube in which it had once slept.
The other tubes remained closed. The blinking blues of their lights no longer indicating that precious pulse of life.
Male or female? Mariner could not be sure, until it stepped slowly into the twilight of the cave. His eyes examined the DiNA, the last of their kind. It was neither male nor female, as far as Mariner could tell, but when it turned towards him, even from the distance of the Sentimental Raven to the rocky outcrop on which it stood, he saw the spirals form to spin within its eyes, and suddenly the DiNA appeared a mirror image of the man himself.
Mariner shook his head to no avail, and stared in muted horror at his own image staring back at him in the dim of the Pirate’s Gap.

Wesley waited till he could no longer see them through the trees before making his way to the horses. He did not have to search. The key drew his hand like a magnet. He and it were the same, forged from iron, bent and beaten under intense heat into the best shape to serve their master. The lock that formed his breastbone ached and pulsed with an urgency that was almost like having a heartbeat.

#WIPSnips - Gods Play House

Lyric hanging out with Seemore solo to learn how Seemore works. Turns out Seemore has the most gallows humor possible.

“I— Okay, whatever.” Lyric crosses his arms. “Yeah, you ain’t your dad. Your dad wouldn’t…”

“Call out your bullshit?” Seemore asks. “Not care that you’re a god and treat you like he’d treat any other person…?”

Lyric hesitates. “You’re a little like your dad.”

Seemore snorts. “Yeah… That’s what I keep hearing. But you know what I got that my dad doesn’t?”

“What?”

“A pulse.”

Lyric snorts despite himself. “Dude!”

Seemore laughs. “Okay, okay, I’ll quit it. That’s only funny so many times before it gets old.”

Lyric rolls his eyes. After a moment, he adds “But, uh… not as old as the eggs I’ll throw at ya if you keep that up?”

Seemore laughs harder. “Yeah, that’s fair!” he wheezes. “You’re good, man.” He holds out a fist and Lyric bumps it with his own. “Hey. No more tears, right?”

#WIPSnips 'pulse'

CN: blood

He turned to face them, and as he did, he spiraled to the ground until he came to rest on one knee. His gaze was on his own leg, soaked in blood to the knee. He wavered and sat down.
Boden was on his knees beside him. He shoved him into the dirt with the words, “Get your heart down!” When he grasped the thigh of Dameth’s moris and pulled, it was as if the cloth had been perforated, so neatly did a rectangle fold away. There was a gash on the interior of his upper leg where they had known it would be. It didn’t look particularly large or serious, but they could see the blood pumping out of it, not a trickle but a steady flow that pulsed with each beating of his heart. A puddle was forming beneath him in the soil and trampled grass.
Feeling faint, Alia sat down at his side. It wasn’t gruesome, not compared to some of the things she’d seen in the last year. This was different, though, because the wound was in the flesh of someone she loved. And when she looked at it, she knew that it was mortal. The quantity of blood coming out of him was terrifying.

‘Pulse’ —> ‘pulsing’

Since this was my doing, I was stationed on the Solar with another engineer and Kai-Ilen to make our team a team of three. Captain Patel was given the command of this ship temporarily for the test and Flyboy came aboard to pilot. Lastly, for communication purposes, Midshipman Bell came aboard for this test, making for a total crew of six.

The human engineer who came with us led our little team; as an Able Crewman, she outranked me as Ordinary Crewman, and she outranked Kai-Ilen who was a civilian. So she sent our status of all green to the bridge. Shortly thereafter the ship engaged in superluminal flight. The drive’s rhythmic pulsing sound was very different from that of the Comet’s drive. It intrigued me.

I watched the clock counting down the nearly seven minutes until the timer reached zero. The sound the ship made reduced and the rhythmic pulsing turned to a hum. We were stationary.

#WIPSnips from Bloody Terrible- reflecting after an incident

"First encounter with a monster hunter?" Nostriano asked, chuckling weakly as he lowered himself into the booth at DeSantos Italian. Everything hurt, pulses and twitches of pain running down his back and arms. He had to lie down, closing his eyes to protect them from the hanging light overhead. He also had to try to lighten the mood. Renee may not have been in hysterics, but she probably wasn’t doing well.
He had started to worry the moment she left his line of sight, had known then it was a mistake. She may not have been the target of any attempt on his life, but she was just as easy collateral for him as against. Seeing her in danger had crystalized that, made his blood boil with more than just the silver poisoning.

For the #WIPsnips
A pulse like a new robotic wave beat isn't healthy...
(I haven't heard the genre myself, but it was invented by robots in the 23th century and no human ever liked it)
This isn't the moment for panic attacks either, but I don't think anyone would have them if they could be planned.

‘Héva? What?’
He froze up completely while she found both shirts and started to change with her back to him. She wore an undershirt anyway, so it didn’t matter anyway, and she kept on talking.
‘I’m sorry, Ronan, I’m so very sorry. But we’ll find our way back, I promise.’
When she turned again, he still wasn’t moving.
‘I know it’s Héva, the land with no men, but like The Nation they should still follow a minimum of international human rights treaties. So that’s why we need the Planetary Council shirts, to remind them of that. And Ghost Town badges are much safer here than your little Epsilon… You’re a Ghost Town boy now, not a Nationer.’
Like a ghost he moved to change his shirt, but something about him was off.
‘Hey, are you okay?’ Pyra grabbed his arm and felt cold sweat, and noticed only now he wasn’t just frozen, but also was hyperventilating. His pulse was beating like a new robotic wave drumbeat, and his face was pale.
She stopped. ‘Panic attack?’ She asked.
He nodded slowly and looked at her, trying find his voice. ‘Sorry.’ He finally said.
‘Hmm… You are not the one who should apologise.
