Nat and Vola don't have more than an academic interest at the moment. However the Ocean is central to Ceres' story and we will be touching on that in Manic Pixie Dream Girl.

Drey: Has lived most of his life in a desert, so he never saw the ocean until he visited the coastal town of Urlosa. It's not the most pleasant memory...

Sulfur: Has likewise never seen the ocean on account of living in the jungle.

Amaurodios has not seen the ocean yet. He doesn't even know it exists. Once they get to a coastline... I can't imagine what he'll think. (But I'll have to imagine it eventually, if I'm going to write it. 😅)

Hailey experienced an awful tragedy at the beach. On a rock jetty. Ever since she's deathly afraid of deep water and won't go near beaches. Unfortunately in Lin J'Roe, beaches can come to you! 🫵 So Hailey essentially has to face her trauma.

The one time Thalia was on a ship, she was ghost stowing away. Alive, she's an overland choo-choo kind of girl.

Ocean critters are cool though! She was sad when the aquarium in Grace shut down, especially since non-arcane critters change texture and color.

Angie misses is dearly. Enclosure seas are universally avoided, and for good reason, but Angie remembers a very different seaside experience. For her, the waves, water, and sand are culturally iconic. She's a Puerto Rican, after all.

One of my favorite scenes is the opening of book 2, where Gielle returns to Maris.

She, of course, has lived with the ocean her entire life. Jarian has never been near that much water, and he gets spectacularly sea sick. (Which she teases him about)

Korrin spends his exile in a tropical, seaside city. He comes to loathe the ocean 😅

He hates how much salt gets into his fur, even when he’s not near the beach. Spends a lot of time with barbers and in bathhouses to keep his fur as short and clean as practical. ⬇️

Calypso is my most ocean-connected character so far! She's one of those sirens I mentioned the other day, and she naturally feels totally at home in and near it.

Currently she's in a desert and often has to stay inland, but she still cherishes her sparse beach time.

20: Characters in Karnassia (co-created with @jmaxwell-author.bsky.social) have varying relationships with the sea, and I mentioned before that I always try to write roughly one character per story who hates boats. A large number of stories are set in port cities, as these...

My characters live by the sea; most of them have been on a boat. Going for a swim is a common activity for like 98% of the characters (exaggerated, but not far off).
My MC Kai has the sea in his back yard; so close he can swim out to catch breakfast.
It’s part of daily life 🪡

#SeptemberWorldbuilders An Islander might sketch it out for you roughly like this. As you can see, perhaps even more than the ubiquitous presence of The Ocean, the dominating influence on life on The Island is the vast DayWalls, hundreds of strides tall and extending into the ocean between each Day.

@frjosom.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 9:48 AM

#SeptemberWorldbuilders *Now is a good time to remind readers that The Island is divided into 7 parts, divided by great, impassable walls that extend nearly a kilometer into the ocean. These parts came to be called "Days" and the walls "DayWalls"…

@frjosom.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 9:48 AM

#SeptemberWorldbuilders … The Island is only about 13km across, so travel by boat between the 6 inhabited Days* takes hours, not days. Large cargo boats aren't necessary, and the largest trimarans are combination passenger/cargo. Heaviest traffic coincides with the 6 Day Festivals, every two months.

#SeptemberWorldbuilders Celesta's atmosphere is denser than Earth's, and her gravity is about .9g. That makes for both taller chop and for stronger wind shear. So boat silhouettes are different than those of Earth: not tall and stately, but wide and sturdy, always with outriggers, usually trimarans…

Photoshop diagram, top down, of a fictional Celestan boat, with trimaran hull and angled, crab-claw style sails set into either side of the structure, rather than in the middle.

#SeptemberWorldbuilders Ziya and Caleb live near the ocean 75% of their adult lives (the other 25% being when they live in the growing capital city of the human survivors of an attempted genocide, trying to keep the peace between dragons and humans). They have a beachside cave for romantic getaways

@bethanylaurel.bsky.socialSep 20, 2026, 5:47 AM

Tempest was born near the ocean. (And his first death happened there.) He doesn’t visit the coast very often these days, but he does love seafood.
