in honor of the legend of zelda's anniversary, i'm gonna repost these pictures of this little painting i did (to test out some paint pens!) of various enemies from wind waker, one of my favoritest games of all time<33

Compliment: being able to jump at will, look in any direction, dash, and hum songs to play them looks fun! #ocarinaoftime #oot #ootremake #loz

People like myself are not zealously defensive of old things because they're old and we're old. We're defensive of these things because we know that they have aged well and they're good enough to stand the test of time. #loz

The only art direction that exists at all starts and ends in the character's new faces. But the moment their clothes, their setting, their environments, anything over-designed and over-tooled begins, you can tell there were simply way, way, WAYYY too many cooks in this kitchen. #loz

If everything has detail and every blade of grass moves and and there's a thousand little greeble lines that make link's supposed-to-be simple tunic look like an MCU armor suit then there is no art direction. There is no direction. There's no singular vision. #loz

We're taught in art school to draw and guide the viewer's eye. You simplify things that the viewer shouldn't dwell on, and add detail and contrast in the place where you want them to look. That invisible arrow IS the direction in "art direction." #loz

Sufficed to say. Old games look good. A lot of new games look good too. I am not crazy about OoT Remake's art-style. I like the revised scale to make the world feel more connected- but I think this whole thing looks like unreal engine vomit. #loz

Some of the most fun painting you'll ever have is simplifying visual elements in a background. "How much fidelity can one take away while keeping the artists' intent clear and communicable to the viewer?" is a fun and risky game to play- and we all know how modern companies feel about risk. #loz

I think these old games look good. Choosing which stock texture to crunch into a 64x64 pixels to make an ivy wall or a crate or a brickhouse is a beautiful artform. A game called Agent 64 just came out on Steam and I've been having a blast with it. It looks great. #loz

@elainewall.bsky.socialSep 8, 2026, 4:02 PM

But to say old PS1 and N64 games "look like shit"-- gives away your ignorance of the art form. Do you say "It reads like shit" of old books? "Looks like shit" of black and white film? Once again- do you think the past is worth throwing away, worth rewriting simply because it's the past? #loz
