Psalm 9:9 (NKJV): The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

The Hebrew word translated “oppressed” means “crushed”. It can also mean “injured”. In my years here on Earth, I have come to realize that we live in a system that does not respect the crushed or the injured. We live in a system that is designed to produce those who are crushed and injured. The crushed and injured exist because of the way society is designed. The oppressed are taken of advantage of by the system. There is great profit in exploiting those who do not have the power to fight back. But the LORD our God is not exploitive. The LORD our God does not ignore the oppressed. The LORD our God gives strength to the crushed. The LORD our God gives healing to the injured. The LORD our God gives safety to the oppressed. Society tells us that the oppressed are getting what they deserve. The LORD our God tells us that the oppressed deserve love and mercy. The LORD our God tells us that the oppressed deserve healing and wholeness. The LORD our God tells us that the oppressed deserve forgiveness and joy. Today, may we unlearn the way that society treats the oppressed and instead learn to live lives that brings the glory of the LORD our God into people’s lives in ways that bring about healing and refuge.

Romans 16:17 (NKJV): Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.

There are going to be those people who come into our community with the wrong intentions. They might not even know that their intentions are wrong. They may think their intentions are genuine. But what they bring is their own selfishness. I can say this because I have been this. I have gone into church communities looking for what I could get out of it. I have sought out to have my ego boosted. It took some time, but Jesus finally started to work on me in a way that made me realize that motivation was myself and not Him. I was definitely someone who needed to be avoided because of the division I could have created. I was serving myself. I cared only for what I wanted. I have learned over the years that this is typical behavior because this is how we are taught by society to think. We are taught that things are there purely for our consumption. So, our desires and lusts are what become important in our lives, by design. It takes a mighty work of the Lord Jesus to finally open our eyes to what is right and true. It takes the movement of the Holy Spirit in us to finally have the power and the wisdom to see what truly matters in life. We may need to avoid allowing the wrong people to come into the community and break it. We do have the assurance that Jesus does not ignore them and does not leave them alone. Jesus takes us as we are and brings us to a place of sanctification through agape love. Today, may we learn to more fully live into the promise of agape love.

Ephesians 4:32 (NKJV): And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

The Greek word that is translated “forgave” contains the ideas of a pardon or a rescue. I know there are times in my life that I forget that Jesus is the one who pursued me first. I forget that I am able to love because Jesus first loved me. I forget that I am able to forgive because Jesus first forgave me. I forget that the power of the Living God resides in me each and every day. For some reason, I still find myself thinking I can do things on my own. I keep thinking that I have plenty of strength to do all the things I am called to do. But I get reminders all the time that the power and strength I need to get through the day come from Jesus. I get reminders that Jesus does not leave me alone in this world. Jesus still pursues me each day with agape love and mercy. Because of this, I am reminded that I need to live out a life that is like Christ Jesus. I need to live a life that is kind to other people and myself. I need to live a life that brings love into the world. I need to live a life that demonstrates the power of forgiveness. Today, may we all learn to fully live a life that magnifies the glory of the Lord Jesus.
