"He was, as I’d expected, sitting on the most precarious slope of the roof... as he gazed out over the stonewalled pastures, the barns and byres and cottages, to the smoke gray and velvet green and misty blue of the forest."

—Daughter of the Forest, Juliet Marillier

Also Bobbie Ann Mason is under-appreciated. She was an early inspiration for me and when I found out they described her work as shopping mall realism I started calling my fiction strip mall realism 😏

Also I love u Audrey for reading for us. 😊

"At last she came to the slope of the mountain on that side... a gradually falling grassy bank... The doe and the fawn followed some distance; then they turned back, letting Eepersip go on alone."

‘I am what time, circumstance, history, have made of me, certainly, but I am, also, much more than that. So are we all.’ ~

For #ReadABookDay, Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820).

A haunted valley, autumn nights, old superstitions and one Headless Horseman. 🐎🌙

Over 200 years later, the Horseman still rides.

🧛📚 #BookWormSat

For #ReadABookDay, a Gothic classic: Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897).

“Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!”

Vampires, old folklore, crumbling castles and things that stir after dark. Some classics never stay buried. 🕯️🦇

The spells which I have studied baffle me,
The remedy I recked of tortured me
I lean no more on superhuman aid;"

"After drying himself with a rough towel, Bond rubbed a small amount of Guerlain’s Imperial Cologne into his skin before putting on a pair of lightweight worsted navy slacks, and a white Sea Island cotton shirt." ~ 'Licence Renewed' (1981), John Gardner.

‘I watched him recede, at grips (myself) with the temptation to get up and follow him…so as to know him better, be myself less lonely. But in spite of my soul’s leap out to him, at the end of its elastic, I saw him only darkly.’ ~ Beckett, Molloy. #BookWormSat #ReadABookDay

“You have a morbid aversion to dying. You probably resent the fact that you're at war and might get your head blown off any second."

"I more than resent it, sir. I'm absolutely incensed."

Joseph Heller, CATCH-22

(full quote, one of a quotable multitude, in ALT-text)

#BookWormSat #ReadABookDay

First edition of CATCH-22 (1961) by Joseph Heller. The book's dustjacket is worn and dingy, its edge battered and missing scattered small bits.

One of a multitude of quotable bits:

“You have a morbid aversion to dying. You probably resent the fact that you're at war and might get your head blown off any second."

"I more than resent it, sir. I'm absolutely incensed."

"You have deep-seated survival anxieties. And you don't like bigots, bullies, snobs, or hypocrites. Subconsciously there are many people you hate."

"Consciously, sir, consciously," Yossarian corrected in an effort to help. "I hate them consciously."

"You're antagonistic to the idea of being robbed, exploited, degraded, humiliated, or deceived. Misery depresses you. Ignorance depresses you. Persecution depresses you. Violence depresses you. Corruption depresses you. You know, it wouldn't surprise me if you're a manic-depressive!"

"Yes, sir. Perhaps I am."

"Don't try to deny it."

"I'm not denying it, sir," said Yossarian, pleased with the miraculous rapport that finally existed between them. "I agree with all you've said.”

― Joseph Heller, Catch-22

‘“Afraid?” murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love. “Afraid! Of HIM? O, never, never! And yet — and yet — O, Mole, I am afraid!”’— Kenneth Grahame, ‘The Wind in the Willows’ (1908) #BookWormSat

"To the composition of novels and romances, nothing is necessary but paper, pens and ink, with the manual capacity of using them."

"Films are for everyone, collective, generous, with children cheering when the cavalry arrives. But your books are selfish. Solitary. Some can't even be read. A person who's interested only in books doesn't need other people; that frightens me."
