In 1880, when Anshutz began work on “Ironworkers’ Noontime”, the majority of American laborers were farmers; only one in seven workers were employed in manufacturing. This, of course, would soon change as industrialization swept across the globe. Anshutz was a long-time teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he worked alongside Thomas Eakins. He was born in Kentucky and raised in West Virginia and this painting, his most famous, was set at the Belmont Nail Works near Wheeling, West Virginia. Anshutz was well acquainted with the factories that were popping up along the Ohio River. “Ironworkers’ Noontime” captures the men on break at the nail factory; they are “puddlers” who produced the sheet metal that was cut into nails. Anshutz is realistic in his presentation of the workers. He used sketching and photography to help with his composition.

Het is duidelijk dat zijn de kaars niet aan heeft kunnen steken want de grond is bezaaid met afgebrande lucifers. In het midden tussen de bergtoppen is nog een stalen constructie zichtbaar met allemaal radarschotels. De nachtelijke hemel zit vol met sterren.
