This scene from Dido on the Edge (coming October 24th!) has some good sounds good on! I like it when characters are just making noises at each other.
#PretendPanel

Dido looked around and picked a random direction. “So, we can just go this way? And that’ll be fine?”
“Totes!” Wendy grinned. “Let’s make it happen!” She strode over and pushed the branches apart.
A vast, worm-like creature with massive red teeth reared up and emitted a deafening gooooooosh sound as it bared its claws.
Wendy sighed. “Okay, wanna have another go at that?”
The behemoth launched itself forward with surprising speed only for its head to explode in a blast of thick black pulp. The body thudded to the ground, Wendy tackling Dido out of the way just in time before an avalanche of viscera spilled from the wound.
Wendy looked up. “Shit. That could have hurt.”
“Mmmfff.”
“But hey, I saved you! Again! What a nice bonding experience.”
“MMMfff.”
“Really makes you feel close— Oh, should I get off you?”
Wendy climbed off Dido who removed her face from the mud, gasping.
“Uuuhhg,” she announced.
“Good point!” Wendy said, thoughtfully. “If I didn’t know any better—”
The huge man who had accompanied Dee appeared through the trees, holding a smoking rifle. He grunted.
Wendy leapt up. “Keller! I take it Sweet Dee is getting impatient to move on.”
“Camp’s this way,” he growled, indicating the opposite direction to what Dido had chosen. He sniffed the air irritably. “She’s covered in shit.”
“UuuHHNG!”
“Slipped, poor thing,” said Wendy. “Do we have towels?”

Thank you to my girlfriend for today's prompt suggestion 🫶

Here's a snippet with a few sounds in it, from A Prayer for the Pirate Queen 🏴‍☠️ 💜 ⚓️ currently in third draft revisions

Kallista drew her close, not sure which one of them was shaking with fear, if not both. The light wavered with the sway of the boat and ship clunking together. Screams and shouts outside were oddly muffled, and instead the waves below and their breath within were amplified. Trapped in this semi-darkness, Kallista gave in for a moment. She kissed Geni's cheek and murmured close to her ear, "We're going to make it."

Interestingly, I don't think many of these actors match the descriptions I've given these characters, but their style and voice definitely suits! Fingers crossed for audio of my books in the future.

I do almost weekly for my in-person Saturday writers group. The instant feedback helps improve my writing substantially.

It can also be encouraging. Earlier today, I read the end of an AMBW romance novel I'm releasing next year. They LOVED it. Can't wait to publish it.

-I read "Today's Special" by David Sedaris in the middle of English class.
As for my own writings, I still read them aloud to my writers' circle with BSFS, and every time I read, my fellow writers & authors have loved the way I read my writings. It's fun.

To answer this, MANY times is my A.
I've been doing it since high school, reading my poetry at the Literary Tea with my art magazine The Vignette in the fall and at the end of the year. Been reading my stories since before high school in front of friends, they loved-

Late to join but never to enjoy the #pretendpanel series! Actually, yes, frequently. Sometimes I will actually act out dialogue/narration to feel the flow. It allows me to feel where the weakness of the text is or where I can add to it.

I read a chapter aloud just today for writer's club! My voice dries out after about four pages.

However, I read short bits aloud to myself all the time. Especially dialogue, to make sure it sounds natural.

I actually feel really bad about the first time I did a public reading of my work. (It was unplanned; I was asked to step in for a no-show.)

I do great reading others' works aloud. Have been told I should do audiobooks. But my own work? 😬

I do read it aloud to myself when editing.

I haven't really, besides a few lines here and there. 😭 I should do that, 'cause I know it's good to.
