I'm thinking about what it's like to be at a conference at which there's a person who persistently causes problems. And then being told to Just Talk To Them, even when it's clear that this confrontation isn't going to go anywhere constructive.

And... in workplaces, there are often people who should get fired but don't.

On social media platforms, there are a lot of accounts that should get banned but don't. They get short term suspensions or get particular posts deleted from time to time, but the account stays and they keep doing the same kinds of bad things.

I don't really have a frame of reference for decision making in a war or for having it out for an entire city, so, I'm thinking about this in terms of a couple things I *do* have a frame of reference for:

Thank you! #ParshaChat
He basically says to God, "I told you so!" #ParshaChat
Or maybe he was afraid they would change HIM? I moved from an exemplary professional environment to a new job in a blatantly unethical and evil environment (no hyperbole). It was so so hard to behave professionally and ethically. #ParshaChat
Q3: Looking at the words of Jonah's prayer from within the giant fish, what are your impressions? Does anything surprise you, raise questions, or stand out as particularly relevant to our theme of caring about people? #ParshaChat
Don’t you wish it was that straightforward? And also there’s some potential here for blaming the person who gives an “inadequate” speech #ParshaChat
I could also see him thinking, look, you and I both know you're just going to forgive them, so could you just DO that and leave me out of it? #ParshaChat
For the same reason that certain politicians in the U.S. and Israel want Iran destroyed rather than de-nuclearized. They think anything less than that rewards evil and/or makes their own countries unsafe. #ParshaChat
Yeah, I'd like to read that too! #ParshaChat
Huh. Now I'm thinking about how Lot moved to Sodom and Sodom was a terrible influence on him.
I wonder if there was anyone who Jonah worried about, in that way. Did he have a wayward son who wanted to move to Nineveh and act like that?
That’s wild! I’d love to find that! #ParshaChat
Right, but if the problem is violation of the rules of hospitality, why would he rather see the city destroyed than see them stop acting like that? #ParshaChat
Indeed. There have been people I didn’t like who sought my help, and I didn’t want to help them. I was already tired and in pain. Where do you draw the line? Maybe he thought it was too much to ask. #ParshaChat
That makes it kind of hard to sympathize with Jonah's reluctance to give that kind of speech and have it actually work.
I wish I could do that! That's the hero dream!
But Jonah would not have seen those movies...
And it doesn't really work that way in real life, but I've seen way too many of those politics shows and movies, and there's a part of me that kind of *feels* like I should be fixing things by making that kind of speech.
And...
This is making me think about how American political movies tend to have a hero character who makes the corrupt people Be Better by making a moral clarity speech at them.
And...
