A3 - I think a lot but it is not entirely in their control. And one thing I think that can be done is not just providing space for student voice but feeding back on the impact it had! I heard what you said and I did this, or I didn't but here are the reasons why, can really go a long way. #LTHEChat
I felt this recently. I mentioned I have ADHD to a new colleague I'd be meeting with, and their response was 'I'll talk about it with [x] and we'll see what we need to adjust'. Inclusion is being treated like a statistic/representative; belonging is being part of the conversation. #LTHEChat
A1b - this is in conflict, though, with the sense of belonging that is created by in-jokes, shared references, knowledge of others, all things that promote community. Promoting sharing, community and comfort while also being welcoming to new people is a hard sweet spot to hit! #LTHEChat
A1 - I think never immediately. Likely a neurodivergence thing - I don't infer well, and actively learning social rules and expectations can be incredibly difficult and take up a lot of attention. Clarity of expectations and communication can do a lot to promote belonging. #LTHEChat
A6 More ice-breaker activities so that they can meet other students from the same and different cohorts and courses, and rotate the team members during seminar activities #LTHEChat
A5 Some HE institutions tend to value more academic rigour rather than care, kindness, and compassion. But I think this is based on the KPIs and how practical it is to measure these elements #LTHEChat
A4 It is difficult to foster a sense of belonging if students do not attend and engage in activities. The irony is that some students want a greater sense of belonging, but they do not engage in the activities #LTHEChat
A3 Even if the organisational culture does not positively contribute to belonging, educators can support each other, sharing good practices, clear communication, and appreciating effort #LTHEChat
A2 The difference lies not only in mentioning 'inclusion' in documents, but also in perceiving that our voice is heard and our contribution is valued through concrete actions and understanding our context #LTHEChat
A1 When I feel inspired by a community of practice, my views are taken into consideration and when there is a need to improve educational practices through collaboration #LTHEChat
True, sometimes the feeling of needing permission to be in HE is where we are failing to communicate with students. Reminds me of an ex-PGCert student, an Academic Skills Tutor when I worked at UAL who said after a session 'mattering matters in education'. #LTHEChat
Lots of lipservice to staff wellbeing and belonging too. The staff working environment is the student learning environment. A lot of uncompassionate, inexperienced professional services staff, making decisions without listening to anyone and silencing and stabbing others in the back. #LTHEChat
I teach online so slides are quite useful, but I avoided them F2F for years. I loved creating the class in real time, making pattern notes on the board to model notemaking. The other horror is staff telling students not to make notes they can look at the slides later. No! late never comes #LTHEchat
Of course there was always that teacher who came in and started writng on the roller board and all you did was copy down the words, desperate to keep up - with no dialogue at all - in fact she didn't even turn around as she wrote... #LTHEchat
The PPT seems to have constrined our very thinking about teaching! Going in to a room with a chalk or white board and a few notes and an idea - and then creating the class - and making the notes on the board as we go - such a powerful modelling of active learning #LTHEchat
You say what I feel so succinctly and so powerfully: "We feel how the system tries to hijack our time and effort away from sustaining relationships with staff colleagues and with students, so changing the institution seems the most(?) important target". thank you #LTHEchat
YES - thank yo for the great questions @ifawolowo.bsky.social - and to #LTHEchat for all the great answers - and even more questions!
AND of course, team teaching! It's what I love. I try to tell people that it is also staff development (because it is) - so try not to worry about the cost! #LTHEchat
Absolutely, that's the magic sauce, happy staff, happy students - it at least, in some way. Colleagues must never be taken out of the equation in these conversations. #LTHEChat
