Today’s devotional
#devotional

Proverb 14:12 (NKJV): There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

The Hebrew word that is translated “the way” means “a road”. Its implication is that it is a well-traveled road. The word that is translated “right” means “straight”. A popular scene in movies is for a character to be running through a forest or wooded area in a hurry to get away from someone when they suddenly find themselves at the edge of a cliff. They are faced with certain death from two different directions. What decision do they make in that moment? Sometimes I think I voluntarily have lived my life like that: running from one crisis to another. It took me awhile to realize that most of the crises that I had were self-made. I finally figured out that there were choices that I was making in life that were leading to the cliffs. Today’s verse is a reminder that we do not have to get to that point in our lives when we are facing cliffs or facing pursuers. I have learned over the years that if I stick more to the path that the LORD my God has trodden for me, the less likely I am to fall into these bad situations. Now, that is not say that my walk with God is not without its perils. Life does life after all. Instead, when I have gotten to the hard parts, I have had the reassurance that the LORD is right there with me. When I stick to the road that God has trodden for me, I find the faith I need to carry me through the bad times. I find that my faith in the LORD our God keeps me on the way to life. I find that my faith in the LORD our God keeps me on the path God has trodden for me. I find that my faith in the LORD our God has given me the faith that this too shall pass. Today, may we all live in the promise that the path that God has trodden for us is the one that leads to life and love.

Today’s devotional
#devotional

1 John 4:1 (NKJV): Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
I have come to realize that many false prophets still go out into the world to this day. I have also realized that the best way to test a prophet is to doubt and question them. Their response to this is always revealing of who they actually are. The false prophets will fight you to prove they are true. The false prophets will try to delegitimatize who you are and what you are saying. The false prophet will try to ostracize you from the group. False prophets despise being tested. The true prophet of God will accept testing. The trust prophet of God knows that Jesus will always come through. The true prophet of God knows that the movement of the Holy Spirit is more important than the prophet’s movements. Jesus still moves in this world, and the true prophet will point to Him. The false prophet always points to themselves. The false prophet always puts themselves on the pedestal as unquestionable. The true prophet lifts up God for all to see and takes the focus off themselves. The true prophet invites questions and doubts knowing that Jesus will dispel them. The true prophet invites questions and doubts knowing that the Holy Spirit will work through them. The true prophet invites questions and doubts knowing that God will be glorified through them. So, today, may we learn to be inquisitive and test the words of those who say they are God’s representative and may we do it all in agape love.

Matthew 18:10 (NKJV): Take head that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven.
These words of Jesus were said at a time when children were seen as property. A child was given value dependent on what the father could get out of them. A first born son was worth a lot more than the second born son. Daughters value only came from what the father could get when he married them off. Property only has the value that the market will support. So, a child’s value was dependent on how they fit into that market. Jesus did not see children this way. Children are not a commodity to be used by Jesus. Children are the representation of the Kingdom of God. How we adults treat children is a reflection of what we believe the Kingdom of God is. Is our kingdom one that only values life through monetary lenses? Or is our kingdom built on the agape love of Jesus? This is something we have to ask ourselves. Do we believe Jesus is correct? Or do we believe in the exploitation of others? Over the years, I have had to clear my thinking of the world’s view of others as commodities. I have had to work at learning how to truly love others as Jesus loves them. It is not always easy loving others. Children do not always behave the way you want them to. They have personalities and their own likes and wants. Just like me, they are uniquely made by God. Today, am I willing to see not just children but everyone the way Jesus sees them: as fully worthy of agape love and mercy?

Today’s devotional

Psalm 9:9 (NKJV): The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

The Hebrew word translated “oppressed” means “crushed”. It can also mean “injured”. In my years here on Earth, I have come to realize that we live in a system that does not respect the crushed or the injured. We live in a system that is designed to produce those who are crushed and injured. The crushed and injured exist because of the way society is designed. The oppressed are taken of advantage of by the system. There is great profit in exploiting those who do not have the power to fight back. But the LORD our God is not exploitive. The LORD our God does not ignore the oppressed. The LORD our God gives strength to the crushed. The LORD our God gives healing to the injured. The LORD our God gives safety to the oppressed. Society tells us that the oppressed are getting what they deserve. The LORD our God tells us that the oppressed deserve love and mercy. The LORD our God tells us that the oppressed deserve healing and wholeness. The LORD our God tells us that the oppressed deserve forgiveness and joy. Today, may we unlearn the way that society treats the oppressed and instead learn to live lives that brings the glory of the LORD our God into people’s lives in ways that bring about healing and refuge.
