It’s #PostboxSaturday with bells on! Thank you so much to the lovely dancer from Wickham Morris for being in a postbox photo! You really could be back in Ye Olde England with all the teams of Morris Dancers about town for the fab Folk Festival this weekend! 😁📮🔔❤️

There are examples of these boxes in museums including at least two at the Post Office museum stores in Debden. Beside this grey green one is a large capacity 'Liverpool Special', created for the Liverpool postmaster who did not care for the new standard type. Only seven were made. #PostBoxSaturday

A parade of preserved post boxes at the Post Office Museum stores in Debden, Essex. Prominent are an early red fluted design, two First National Standards - one with its foot intact - a 'Liverpool Special' (surmounted with an elaborate crown, these were larger than the First National Standards to cope with the large amount of post generated in that fine city) and three Penfolds.

The 'First National Standards' were made in two sizes - a larger, wider size for higher volume areas and a smaller narrower version for elsewhere. The only other one of this type still in service appears to be inside the Riverside Museum in Glasgow. #PostBoxSaturday

Notable features of the First National Standard are the chunky aperture, the embellished hexagonal cap and the absence of any 'Post Office' casting or royal cypher on the pillar. They were not universally popular and were superseded by the much loved 'Penfold' design in 1866. #PostBoxSaturday

On the corner of Montpelier Road in Brighton stands this First National Standard pillar box. These were introduced in 1859, superseding a multitude of local designs. This one is believed to have been installed in December 1859 and may be one of only two of this type still in use. #PostBoxSaturday

Street scene. The corner of Montpelier Road, the junction with Western Road in Brighton East Sussex. A three storey stuccoed Regency house, the ground floor is now 'Bamo Barber'. There is a mural to the left of the frame depicting a barbershop scene from the Simpsons. Homer Simpson stands to the right of a barber chair holding a pair of scissors. At the centre of the image, a red painted letter box.Red cylindrical post box with a hexagonal cap, immediately beneath which is the aperture. There are no 'Post Office' markings and no royal cypher. Prior to the introduction of this design, local postmasters were responsible for the design of the post boxes in their respective areas resulting in a large number of different designs and variations in colour. This type of box, a 'First National Standard' introduced in 1859 and possibly one of only two survivors of the type in active use, replaced all such variations with one standardised type. They were initially green in colour - prior to 1859 there was no standard colour. Many boxes were red but green was standardised at the same time that the 'First National Standard' design appeared. This example on the corner of Montpelier Road in Brighton, East Sussex, is believed to have been quietly 'doing its thing' in the same location since December 1859.
