Matthew 4:19 (NKJV): Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Jesus is calling Andrew and Peter to come and be followers. The Greek word that is translated “fishers” means “sailor”. It comes from the word meaning salt. When I read that, something clicked in me. I have always wrestled with this verse. I have always wondered if Jesus is truly to tell us to throw nets on people and drag them in. That to me does not seem to line up with the Gospel and with agape love. I do not read in the Scriptures the commandment to kidnap people into believing. I do not read in the Scriptures the commandment to coerce people into faith. Instead, we are called to lay down our lives like Jesus did and demonstrate agape love. We are called to serve those in need. We are called to the salt in people’s lives. We are supposed to help people find the path that Jesus has trod from them, so that they too can walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. We are supposed to help people find the forgiveness and mercy that is so freely given by Jesus to all. We are supposed to help them find purpose and wholeness in God. Jesus did not force us into belief and faith. The Holy Spirit did not strong arm us into allowing the indwelling of God’s power in our lives. God did not coerce us into a life of obedience and trust. We were loved into these things. We were invited into these things. Today, may we learn to be the salt in people’s lives that helps them find the agape love of Christ Jesus.
