From my Epic Fantasy novel Demon’s Bargain. A happy golden evening with the weird foreign refugees that Despard rescued.

Whooping and spinning to mirror Kahyla’s steps, Despard clapped in the space where she had danced a moment ago. With a giggle, Kahyla bounced on tiptoes before twirling again. Despard bumped into the guardroom wall, trying to match her and collapsed into laughter on the floor. Abber stopped singing the Huxen saga, leaving the fate of another saint unknown. “We’d have more room in the warehouse,” Despard said between panting breaths. “It’s too cold out there,” whined Tebfin. Next to a dented pot, he put down his improvised drumstick, a spoon from the evening’s dinner. “But I’ll go out there if you’ll show me more knife throwing.” Bedrolls and provisions had been pushed back, but the stove and wood crowded the room. Fabric pinned to the walls cut the winter’s fierce winds. Blowing in from the northlands, the wind had plunged Bivmiav into a deeper cold. Despard chuckled. Half his harness gaped empty, the knives still embedded in the makeshift target in the warehouse. Only a few had dropped to the floor when he showed off his skills to the young boy. “Tebfin, let him be,” said Kahyla. “When you’re lord of the manor, you mustn’t exhaust your liege-sworn.” “Master Dimmon wouldn’t let me do something stupid with the Tamrin liege-sworn,” Tebfin said. “Besides, Despard isn’t liege-sworn. He could walk away if he didn’t like the job.” Not quite. Despard needed a reputation to get better jobs. Anton had mentioned that Despard’s absence from the tavern had been noticed. Dancing with Kahyla risked losing contracts that brought hard coin. Money he would need, especially in the spring, when fresh food grew scarce in urban Bivmiav. He rationed his evenings of laughter carefully, bringing a small piece of fruit and performing all the ritual greetings before basking in Kahyla’s family life.
