#WIPSnips

A shocking amount of spattered blood stained the cushioned chairs and carpets he had hitherto associated with comfort, quickening his #pulse and exacerbating his nicotine craving.

From the Vampire and the Vintage.

Kathian forces Jehani to make a difficult but necessary confession.

#WIPSnips #WritingCommunity #Writesky #Vampires #Romance

Before he could go on, they shook their head. “Don’t. I don’t want to hear any excuses for why you couldn’t care about all of them being treated like meat, not even the one you told me was your friend. I’m supposed to believe that it’s somehow different now? That doesn’t even make any sense, Jehani.”

They tried to make for the door and his cowardice nearly let them go. At the last second, he grabbed their wrist, oh so gently. He needed them to stop, but wouldn’t hurt them to make it happen. They halted without turning to face him. Fine, he could deal with that. “Please, let me finish, and I swear it is the truth of the matter.”

“Fine.”

“I had a change of heart. I met this new Vintage, a beautiful young mortal who was wild and recalcitrant and absolutely rude the first time I saw them.” The anger he could feel vibrating through them, hear in their rapid pulse, ebbed just a little and he tried not to hope too much. “I got to know you in a way I didn’t even with Terrence. Who you are, what you think and feel.”

He released their wrist and walked around face them. They were still mad enough to look away, yet when he laid a hand along their jaw and gently turned them back to look at him, they didn’t resist. Was that a hint of hope he saw trying to crowd out the anger in those beautiful eyes? He forced himself to go on.

“I looked at the past, and the realities the future offered, and saw both with new eyes. I have regrets I didn’t before, but it’s so much more than that. I can’t bring myself to subject you to any part of it. As for your blood, it’s yours to share, or not, as you wish.”

#WIPSnips: pulse

I've never done coke, so I'm hoping this isn't way off

#WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WriterSky

Finally, the night was over. I was relieved Matt managed to pass out in spite of being high as a kite, and I didn't need to have sex again. I lay awake as he snored, feeling each pulse of my blood and wondering what was the youngest age someone had died from a heart attack.

Don't have "pulse", but I do have "heartbeat" as Iluaneh is using her healing magic to detect it.
No actual spoilers included, even though this has some significance to the plot.
#WIPSnips #writing #writingcommunity #writesky

The entire village seemed to have converged on the road before Onisimu came, running frantically and elbowing his way between the onlookers. Iluaneh expected him to be the same collected. detached healer he had always been, and he was anything but As soon as his eves fell on the corpse, his iaw went slack and he went down on his knees, putting trembling hands over the boy
"Is he dead?" someone asked callously in the back of the crowd
"Dead?" someone else repeated, with dread rising in their voice and rippling through everyone assembled in the road
Iluaneh was standing close enough to extend a tread of magic to detect a heartbeat. There wasn't one. She could sense the rapid pounding in the chests of the physician, the mother, the father--but nothing from the ashen-faced boy. His red hair was like a flame atop his lifeless body. And the flames were now the only thing that awaited him

He raised his gun. “I’m just gonna shoot you.”
“Yeah, but if you stand that close...”
Her blade flashed out, the edge of it striking the barrel of his gun.
As soon as her weapon made impact, his exploded. A ragged pulse of energy shot out in all directions, not strong enough to take anyone off their feet, but certainly enough to stagger them. Even the queen, who rapidly patted the sparking embers that landed on her poncho.
“…I can do that,” Val finished. “And your gun shouldn’t have exploded like that.”
It was unlikely the man who’d attempted to shoot her could hear her. She couldn’t tell if he, laid out on the floor, was even conscious, but if he was, he’d likely be in too much pain. Plus, an explosion that close to his ears couldn’t be good for them.
“Oh.” As her gloved hands finished smothering the sparks that’d misted her person, she marveled at the unburned material that still slightly smoldered. “This thing’s fireproof. That’s handy.”
She looked around the place at the panicked crew, cowering against the far walls.
“Okay. Anyone have a real strong desire to be next?”

#WIPSnips October 12 pulse
Virgin Temple Prostitute, Werdil is on a mission with priest's daughter, Mel. He suspects a girl who's travelling with him is the avatar, Aublelma and wants to rescue her.
From "Tales of Midbar: Heretical Gods" - like this? Click here: www.inkitt.com/stories/497649

Background: A fancy car parked outside a gate in a wall with lots of cacti and succulents growing on it.

Of course it was my job to do the chickens as I had training and experience of preparing sacrifices (although only me and Mel were suposed to know that). I soon realized that these had been killed in odd ways. One had a broken kneck, but with vertebre broken in a strange way, another a crushed scull, the third one's heart seemed to have exploded. Upon discovering that the fourth had had its lungs crushed, it struck me, this was the work of somebody practicing a power that did weird and destructive things to living tissue! When I realized this, I started sweating and my pulse started racing. I calmed myself and thought what to do.

"Who killed these chickens?" I asked to Mel and Quand, who were the only people in the kitchen.

They both stared blankly at me.

I'd read about things like this. This was a message. Aublelma was trying to tell me who she was and that she wanted my help.

#WIPSnips and #Sniptober words somehow touch on the most tragic aspects of False Horizon for both main characters, but I can't share the juiciest examples because they're major spoilers 😭😭 pain and agonies!!

I am totally not spinning a wheel to see which wip the snips come from, so imagine my enjoyment when the wheel that totally doesn't exist landed on my vampire story lmao. Luckily the second main character is a werewolf.

He closed their door softly. Refastened the chain. Turned the deadbolt with a quiet click. Then just stood there for a second, the box of muffins still in his hands, his pulse a quiet roar in his ears. The smell of waxy banana and almond clung to the box, sickly sweet and cloying.

I cleared my throat, took another deep breath.
They (Roe) swept hair out of my face and pressed two fingers to the #pulse at my neck.
"Roe," I muttered
"Your heart rate is slowing down."

Oh Zach, you’re gonna have a lot of heartbreak in your future

#writesky #wipsnips #writingcommunity #booksky

His friend had been uncharacteristically quiet since
Cleo's location had been discovered, though it wasn't hard to guess why. Anyone with eyes could see that Noah was head over heels for Cleo. He'd caught his friend staring longingly more times than he could count. It bothered him at first that both of his best friends were so clearly intended to be paired together, while he was completely in the dark about his own future, but the arrival of Lana had put those feelings to rest. Granted, she was a bit abrasive towards him, but for whatever reason, that fact only drew him in more. He wanted to earn her approval. Unfortunately, it seemed that the most surefire way to do so would be to assist in the capture of his friends. He was fairly certain that Noah's personal feelings would prevent him from actively subduing Cleo-not that Zach was eager to do it himself.
He simply accepted the mission as an inevitability.
Someone was going to have to sedate her, and frankly he trusted himself to be more gentle about it than Lana. If he managed to prove himself useful on this mission, she may even begin viewing him in a different light.
They'd all been outfitted with a sedation injector which could be applied quickly and painlessly, as well as a stun baton which emitted micropulse vibrations throughout the nervous system and caused enormous amounts of pain until the target lost consciousness. He doubted if Sherman Wright would approve the use of any tool that would cause permanent harm to his only daughter, but he would still rather not have to use the stun baton.Cover for The Earthlings!

Yay new #WIPSnips week!

Since folks liked the sni[ abt Liese yesterday, I thought I'd share a little bit more about poor Liese's journey.

Leo has brought Paige to her place to grab a few things, after escaping the Venatori at Midnight's Ball.

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #BookSky

A dark image with white text that reads:

Paige’s breathing hitched. She stopped dead a few steps from the second landing, her pulse speeding up again.
     "Leo," she whispered.
He gripped her hand, then slowly crept around her. The door to one of the apartments was ajar. He couldn't smell anything past the psychedelic-purple fragrance of the cleaner, but he could hear heartbeats on the floors above and below.
No heartbeat on this floor, and no post-mortal currents.
     "It's empty," he said.
"Empty?" Her voice shook, tears edging her eyes.
Oh no. "Who's supposed to be there?"
     "Liese," she replied.
"Wait here," he said, before dashing into her apartment at full speed.
The apartment smelled worse than the hallway, the caustic scent of Venatori poison still slightly detectable, but it was no longer hovering in the air.
This is bad. The Venatori came here first.

A chill crept up Tharaiyelagh’s spine. “Are there such troubles ahead?”

Reaching out, Tsai-Van engulfed Tharaiyelagh’s hands in his enormous ones. “Oh, child,” he said softly. “Always.” His gaze pinned Tharaiyelagh in place, quickening his pulse and drying his mouth.

Nin has stopped her horse to offer a ride to the handsome stranger walking by the side of the road. Now she can see how tall he really is.

Silhouette of an oak tree against a green background.

Text: A Sylvan Tale #WIPSnips "pulse"

Turning around while seated on her horse, Nin finally gazed at the stranger. He was handsome. Far more handsome than Alan, and he was the most handsome man in Oakdore. The stranger had a neat beard that wasn’t too long and a smile that dazzled her with straight white teeth. But it was his eyes that made her heart pound as if someone was chopping wood in her chest with the sharp and thunderous impact of each beat. She could not tell if they were green or brown, for it seemed they changed colors between the two as he moved through the dappled shade. She felt hypnotized by their stunning vibrancy as he unapologetically stared back at her with an intensity that temporarily rendered her mute.
As he walked up to the horse, she finally got a sense of how tall he was. Barley was eighteen hands high, and Nin was as tall as the horse at her withers. No one except Alan was taller than Nin in Oakdore, and that was by only a few inches. This stranger’s shoulder came up to Barley’s withers, meaning he was a full head taller that Nin. Standing next to the horse, Nin gawked, her mouth agape and her pulse now beating faster than a drum during a fast jig.

In Prophecy 71, the MCs return from a capital-Q Quest, with Zedenko tied/roughed up. Gallara has been trying to overcome her culturally-ingrained racism, especially after a bad slip with Alakshi, and hopes her mind charm spell will help here.

When they finally made it to the city gates, a couple of guards jumped to block them before they even got close. “Who are you, and who’s that with you?” one of them shouted. “Holy shit, what did you do to - Wait, is he a half-elf? Oh, well then, he probably -”
Gallara looked both guards in the eye, and magic pulsed in her skull again as she leaned in. “Half-elves are just as deserving of respect as anyone,” she hurried, “and the vast majority are nice people. This one is an outlier, and that’s only because of extreme circumstances. Don’t you agree?” Part of her wondered if maybe she was trying too hard.
“Oh, yes, definitely,” the human guard said, and the elven one nodded as they both eased their posture. “My cousin dated one for a little while, and he was polite as you please.”
“Don’t forget it. Now can we pass?” She glanced back at Alakshi, who looked uncomfortable. Crap, she was trying too hard. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I freeze as I see a woman look out of ‘my’ window. She's cradling a mug in her hands for warmth, just like I used to. For a moment our eyes meet before she steps back out of view behind the drapes and nets. I don't know what to think. All I can hear is the blood rushing in my ears and nothing else. My mind is racing and my heart is pounding in my chest.

Between her numbing butt and her shaking limbs and too many spent emotions, Viv must’ve misheard. In her drunken state, Caden’s words morphed into some sentiment she craved. Who didn’t want to be wanted by any man, but by this sexy as a stripper, sweet as taffy, soft as a Squishmallow man. Even with the spreading wetness on Caden’s sweater from her tears and the snow, even with the increasing cold and wind despite the storm slowing, Viv couldn’t be happier anywhere else than here, leaning her cheek against Caden’s freezing chest, listening to his fluctuating heartbeat, breathing in his cedary scent.

Except she wasn’t that drunk. Not really. The cold, the tears cleared the alcohol from her system better than ten cups of coffee. And this fantasyland had to end now that the snow tapered off. Caden offered another few days, offered to stay, in fact, until the wedding ended, but that was too big an ask. He helped longer than she imagined and for that he earned her eternal gratitude.
