RubyGems 4.0.21 is out and three of the small items are the ones to read this week: gem extraction now normalizes absolute symlink targets, Bundler refuses a redirect that downgrades https to http, and an empty CHECKSUMS entry no longer triggers a local resolve. gem update --system

TouRuby OTP Challenge: Day 16

Another fine morning has arrived in Jewel Land. Ruby's brushing her teeth shiny and clean while Tour is doing his daily yoga exercises. Their lifestyles couldn't be any more different.

Rails footgun of the day: the commented-out default in ApplicationJob, discard_on ActiveJob::DeserializationError, discards more than deleted records. Argument deserialization rescues everything, so a connection drop while locating the GlobalID becomes a quiet discard. Check error.cause.

He’s names Ñéko now and he’s a shapeshifter alien thing that picks a cat-like appearance to better relate to his cat children

I’m happy someone else is discovering the joy of Ruby in the Frontend of Rails web applications!!! 🤩

Wow! I just discovered #Mojo. It's basically Crystal for Python. Meaning, an ultra-fast systems programming language that intentionally adopts the syntax of #Python for programmer friendliness, just like how #Crystal adopts the syntax of #Ruby.

TouRuby OTP Challenge: Day 15

I'm initially confused by what this prompt meant, until I found out about themed Jewelpet merchandise centered around gingham patterned clothes, two of which include Ruby and Tour. Close enough, huh?

thoughtbot is a Speaker Support sponsor of EURUKO 2026 – thank you.

Two thoughtbotters are on the programme too: Sarah Lima and Rémy Hannequin run the workshop "It's about Time" on Sep 18 – time zones, DST gaps, leap seconds and the bugs they cause.

You know what? I'm feeling like posting two pictures of Ruby today, the last one was just way too fuzzy!

Is it just me or is Ruby looking extra fuzzy in this pic 🤔🤔🤔

This is from my bitmap font loader for Gosu, written in Ruby. It was surprisingly easy to write!

I want to try and do some cool effects with text like they did on retro games.

WhiteRose locked and loaded

Also, what was Surge doing there? She and Ruby aren't even friends...

The RubyGems story this week is a registry problem, but your side of the fix has shipped since Bundler 2.6: bundle lock --add-checksums writes a CHECKSUMS section into Gemfile.lock, and every later install raises ChecksumMismatchError if a gem's bytes change. Pin the bytes, not the version.
