#QueerWritersChat A4: I do! I think wanting something is a pretty relatable experience that can connect readers to characters.

So far, I've mostly written stories with happier endings, so the MC often gets what they yearn for eventually, even if I put them through a lot beforehand😅

@sadiehepworth.bsky.socialOct 3, 2026, 12:37 AM

Absolutely, I love all things yearning and pining! I think my favorite kind in romance might be when they're together in some capacity but still unsure of the other's feelings so that they're pining WHILE in a relationship. I like writing those kinds of stories.

Not sure how to interpret that.

I think yearning as a character emotion done well is very effective and appealing for me as a reader, but "themes" about yearning? I dont know what that would look like.

As in commentary on yearning as an emotion?
Possibly?

@cherrypickett.bsky.socialOct 3, 2026, 12:37 AM

#QueerWritersChat A2: Hm. As much as I'm writing romance, the yearning here is centered on wanting to live in a world where they could openly be in relationships with each other. They make it work anyway.

looking for connection and companionship and a need to be seen/understood is a core part of pretty much everything i write, so yeah

#QueerWritersChat A3: Ahaha, accidentally pre-empted this in a downthread answer to A2.

Yes, the Aven Cycle is *full* of yearning. Sempronius and Latona yearn, desperately, so much. You can practically hear the tortured string music around them in some scenes. I love it, star-cross'd torment.

#QueerWritersChat Q3

It depends on the story! Some of them have more of it than others.

The Need for Dandelions has a lot of yearning, as does Chicory in the Garden!
In both stories, the MCs yearn for the relationship they think is out of reach!

@elizmanderson.comOct 3, 2026, 12:36 AM

y e s specifically I love when someone is like "I will never Want anything again" for various reasons (loss, feeling unworthy, whatever) but then they find themselves inescapably Yearning

(cough cough Peter Shaughnessy cough cough)

#queerwriterschat i should think so, especially if i'm working romance into it. if there's no yearning for another character, then it's not a romance, is it?

#QueerWritersChat Q2

My characters often yearn for a home! Whether that means a place, a person, a feeling… That’s what they want!

@theeldervampire.bsky.socialOct 3, 2026, 12:34 AM

#QueerWritersChat I'd like to think so! 😁❤️
First snippet is from The Witch of Eden Hollow
The second is from Beautiful, But Deadly

Avery looked up at the sky. He watched the breeze flow through the leaves. He breathed in the clean air, letting it out with a deep, blissful sigh. He began to wonder just what Tristan saw in him that he thought was beautiful. Was it his face? His hair? Did he like his smile? The more that he thought about it, the more that he remembered what his own reflection looked like in Elias’ looking glass. And he realised without any dread or shame that he like those things about himself, too.

Tucking some of his dishevelled hair back, he could not help a soft, watery smile. For the first time, he truly felt as beautiful as Tristan thought he was. Perhaps, more so. He liked his body. He liked seeing himself when he was caught up in pleasure. He liked his own voice, his own smile. He was radiant.But why was he thinking about *love,* of all things?

Foolish. Utterly foolish.

*Come now.* Eadmund had better self-control than that. It was not going to fawn over one act of kindness.

Two, actually.

And if it went on to list the many more since the first, it would be endless. Such a good, kind soul had a hold on its heart, and he could very well squeeze it within his grasp.

Eadmund groaned, covered his eyes. What was *wrong* with him?

As it firmly rubbed its hand down its face, it glared up at the ceiling. These feelings were nothing. All rubbish. It was simply lonely. That was all. It was not going to be swayed.

But Oleander *did* have lovely eyes.

Eadmund’s breath caught in its throat. *No.* No, it could never be. *Remember? He fears you.*

adam yearns to be less stressed and for someone to accept him & his disabilities

luci yearns for a romantic partner. being from a not very openminded small town, he hasn't had much luck in the love department

(lol just answering for this story means my posts aren't 5 posts long)

Hi! I’m Rebecca and I’m currently plotting a new thriller about a woman who discovers her late mother all but adopted her childhood bully … who has now gone missing, possibly because of something Mom uncovered shortly before her death. 🤔

Rory yearns for connection. The dragon rides wants his life back. The scarred man doesn't yearn for anything.

Not really. My stories deal more in fulfillment. Maybe not the dreams the characters cherished when you met them, but I tend to center people overcoming problems in ways that teach them about themselves and leave them happier

Good morning from the land of snakes and spiders #QueerWritersChat!

I'm up to draft 3 of my monogamous bisexual romance built around processing past traumas and getting a 2nd shot at things - think of it as reloading from the save

The betas really worked out for me 😁

There's yearning, but the tone isn't necessarily that. Much of the story is told from Lux's POV, so they get to be an ear for Cara and Emilia as they talk about how much they miss each other.
