For this entry we're talking about a recently named polish horseshoe crab!

All the basic infos are here but if you want to learn more, there’s more in the thread below!⬇️🧵

This species, with its super enlarged genal spines, is the oldest horseshoe crab found in Poland, and is another piece in the puzzle of how these animals were extremely successful after the Permian-Triassic mass extinction.

Size : 10-ish cm of body length
Time period : Early Triassic
Paleoart speculativometer : Few missing details

The animal drawn is a horseshoe crab but with super large and narrow elongations of its head part on its sides

Finally getting around to studying some old specimens for the first time this #FossilFriday. These eurypterids were discovered in the 1960s and almost certainly represent new species. Discoveries such as this really highlight the importance of museum collections as records of life on our planet. 🧪⚒️

A photograph of a fossil eurypterid on a brown-grey rock. The fossil as a wide, round body with a long abdomen. The head is relatively small and and short legs that are very robust, the last pair of which are big, broad paddles.A fossil of a eurypterid on a brown-grey rock. The eurypterid has a large head with long legs, all of which are for walking. The body is narrower than the head and looks overall a bit dumpy.

Dinodontosaurus tener from Brazil, Dinodontosaurus brevirostris from Argentina, and Dinodontosaurus isiyavamanda from Tanzania

Happy #FossilFriday! New fossil discoveries are rewriting the early history of owls. More than 350 Pleistocene bones provide the first detailed view of Athene vallgornerensis, revealing a variable anatomy and a more arboreal lifestyle than modern owls.

From today’s Bristol Post, an article on Dorothea Bate ( 1878-1951 ) a Welsh palaeontologist and pioneer of archaeozoology. Her life's work was to find fossils of recently extinct mammals with a view to understanding how and why giant and dwarf forms evolved.

Loving this giant model of the Homo antecessor skull - you can walk inside!

The original was found in the Atapuerca caves nearby, thought to be ~1 million years old!
