This rain should be the end of the #NativePlants Lobelia siphilitica blooms but hopefully they will make good seed and spread themselves around a bit for us because I love this color as part of the late summer palette!

Prior to planting, the dense blue blooms were calling to #pollinators from the deck. After a good run in the ground, the spikes are starting to run out of fresh flowers and will soon go to seed.

We’re now have #NativePlants Grindelia lanceolata established and blooming in three beds with pretty different conditions so this is definitely a great late-blooming workhorse.

Eastern Carpenter Bees stealing nectar from the Azure Sage. Their passionflowers aren't blooming a lot now that the weather is changing, so they have to make do. #bees #nativeplants #BlueTuesday 🌱 #gardening

A carpenter bee is seen in profile clinging to the top of a pale blue salvia flower. She is a large bee with a black head, fuzzy yellow shoulders, and a long shiny black abdomen that is somewhat spoon shaped, with bristly tan hair on the underside. Her mouthparts are sticking out, about to pierce the top of the flower just below the calyx. Xylocopa virginiana and Salvia azurea. The same bee, seen from behind grasping another salvia flower and drinking from the top of it. Her wings are a little frayed on the edges. An extreme closeup of another carpenter bee drinking from a sage flower. The holes they make are usually hidden under the edge of the calyx.A closeup of a Salvia azurea flower with some visible holes in it from carpenter bee feeding. They only took me up on ~70 plants but they are all collected in one place, ready for pickup 🫡 had to raid my downy skullcap volunteers, but that's ok. There will be more.

To me, acorns are a tree's dark pearls, they are bird home and squirrel dash, and they are the sound of fall weather - pang pang pang - as Santa Ana winds knock loose the hard nuts that pelt the roof of the backyard shed."
