A2 #LTHEchat genuinely hadn't occurred to me that there might be any expectation to do anything else except get along?
They are in the UK in my experience as well. Commuting students need to leave promptly, especially if they are using public transport if it involves getting back from a small city to an even smaller village A2 #LTHEchat
A1 #LTHEchat In my halls, in the bar, and hanging out around it. In the student union bar, too. In second and third year, in our houses, in the living room.
I stay - at least until the next class comes in - and always get a student or two who hold abck to ask a question. Soemtimes we need to spill into the corridor. #LTHEchat
Love this idea. We have a small share kitched so chat time when making a cuppa but no space to sit down #LTHEchat
Q3 - When attendance drops, how do we respond? And what might that tell students about why being in the room matters?
Reply with A3 #LTHEChat and your response @columfromcork.bsky.social
As an aside doing in-person tutorials as we were easing out of the pandemic, when neither I nor the students were allowed to stay on campus for any significant time once the tutorials had finished, was an eerie & unsatisfying experience #LTHEchat
We've had to clsoe some of the cafes on campus so students need to go out for food. Though in my school we now share a tiny kitchen with students and have a student fridge, access to a microwave and kettle. #LTHEchat
A2 #LTHEchat while in London there's less of a binary divide than elsewhere, because students could live in halls which are still a fair distance from teaching spaces, there are also different & sometimes contradictory needs for commuter students & those who are more university-based
We tried to recreate that commonroom feel when running drop-ins - with an urn for tea and coffee and biscuits for an early morning catch up - and a friend at work has that arrangement for all her students - a friendly place to drop-in, make tea, have a chat #LTHEChat
A2, why would they stay? They are tired from an hour of thinking, an hour cooped up, they have other classes, they need to eat, to socialise etc #LTHEChat
A2 - do they have to do a cross-campus sprint to get to their next class? Or catch a train, or get to a work shift?
Or just can't wait to get out of my presence!
Or because my class was on a Friday afternoon and they want to kick off the weekend? I hate Friday afternoon classes!

A2 #LTHEchat I'm about to repeat my experience from last year, teaching a relatively small group of final year undergrads from 1-3pm on Friday. Given that they're also looking for a role or further study in a tough job market & have other distractions I can't blame them for wanting to leave promptly
#LTHEChat A2 Students are too busy & weighted with work and responsiblities - they would need 'permission' to just be in and around the university these days. Same with staff: if we're not being visibly productive we're doing something wrong! Slow time, laughter, just 'being with' is a luxury
A2 Sometimes it is just there is another class come in; space is tight. Staying on campus though I feel there is often the challenge of not having a 'home' space #LTHEchat
A2 My students leave promptly because they are either dashing to the next class, grabbing a bite to eat before the next class or dashing away to got to work. #LTHEchat
A2 - sometimes, time to really think about where/why they are going #LTHEchat
So good to have you here! The marvels of Wi-Fi. I'm not sure we had hot running water when I last stayed in a caravan. #LTHEchat
