An AI-enhanced screenshot from Lord of the Rings Online in the style of Gustave Caillebotte. His style ranged from impressionistic plein air landscapes to more realistic city scenes, so the hard surfaces of the windows received a gloss that wouldn't be seen in an ordinary Impressionist's work. The reflection of the hills in the windows was all the AI's idea --- I've been careful not to mention hobbits or the Shire, to keep it from mining the work of living artists, so its inference that there were hills surrounding the location is a bit uncanny, but cool nonetheless.The original screenshot from The Lord of the Rings Online. Years ago I'd seen a note card with a painting of fruit crates, and that sent me on the trail of Gustave Caillebotte. I've studied art history all my life, and at the ripe old age of 69 it's become a fun journey discovering new artists and learning new skills.The inspiration image. The memory of the painting led me to discover Gustave Caillebotte, whose work also included landscapes and city scenes with the kind of light effects I was looking for. Serendipity has been a big part of the project.

Velazquez often made his subjects seem to stare out of the frame. He was also very good at hats with feathers in them! At first I tried Monet because of the garden in the background but the result was a mess. The face was the important part and Monet was not into the details of faces.Sadly, our computer won't play LOTRO unless the graphics are turned waaay down! I decided to crop this image from the character selection screen even further and turn it into a portrait. The style inspiration. Diego Velazquez was interested in everyone, no matter their social status, and painted the little people who served in the court with as much, if not more, respect and penetration as he did the royalty who employed him.

An AI enhancement of a screenshot from The Lord of the Rings Online in the style of Maxfield Parrish. The AI didn't know what to do with her massive feet so I put her in boots soon afterwards. Tolkien meant hobbit feet to be neat and nimble!The original screenshot. I'd wanted to share my progress through the game with screenshots, but it looked so flat I decided to enhance it with AI in the style of Maxfield Parrish to give the sky some glow and the tree roots some texture. A project was born!The inspiration artist: No one does skies and trees better than Maxfield Parrish!

This is a screenshot from The Lord of the Rings Online enhanced with AI in the style of John Edward Millais's "Ophelia". No living artists were harmed in the making of this image. The original screenshot. I chose "Ophelia" as the inspiration image because of its water and plant details. I had to tell the AI to specify her Edwardian bathing costume and give her an expression of serenity so she wouldn't look like a suicide!The inspiration image. I told the AI to enhance the screenshot in just the style of Millais, without mentioning "Ophelia", to avoid the AI's tendency to put my character in a dress! It's giving the program too much freedom with vague, non-specific prompts that gets people in trouble.
