We remember the dream. We remember the victories. But what was Martin Luther King Jr. working toward when he was killed in 1968? My first Smart Brown Girl Research Note looks at the Poor People’s Campaign, economic security, and the unfinished part of King’s story. #blackhistory #poorpeoplescampaign

Langston Hughes: “My soul has grown deep like the rivers.” Here is a copy of the book “The Weary Blues,” by Langston Hughes. Cover art: Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias (1904-1957). Photo: Sotheby’s. #art #poetry #BlackHistory #hispanicart

A tattered, ripped book cover with the words “The Weary Blues” (the word The mostly ripped off), and “by Langston Hughes” (the “S” torn away). A stylized Black man plays the piano. A lamp above the keys radiates a stylized burst of yellow light.

In the Elaine (Arkansas) Massacre of 1919, mobs of white people & state militia killed over 200 Black people after sharecroppers tried to organize a labor union. Grif Stockley wrote the first definitive account of this event in his 2001 book, Blood in Their Eyes. #massacres #BlackHistory #history

Once free, Millie and Christine continued performing, but their situation was fundamentally different.

They were no longer enslaved property who could legally be bought and sold. Their career expanded into an extraordinary international success.

They became known as the “Two-Headed Nightingale.”

The end of slavery did not end attempts by other people to control them.

A complicated dispute developed over custody of the sisters and control of their lucrative performing career.

The sisters were sold while still very young and passed through the hands of various owners and showmen.

They were exhibited before paying audiences and were even kidnapped amid disputes over who possessed the right to display them.

Before Millie and Christine were old enough to understand what was happening to them, they had become valuable commodities not only because they were enslaved, but because people would pay admission to see them.

The sisters were conjoined at the lower back and pelvis, but each had her own head, torso, arms, and legs.

Almost immediately, white businessmen recognized that the unusual bodies of the two infants could be turned into a profitable public spectacle.
