Jin Qi is my fave cuz i tend to like the ones with the best character development

yes he did some red flag things but he’s ultimately such a good person
he was willing to learn and understand his wife and isn’t afraid to show vulnerabilty

that’s superb ML material 👍

I just want some sense that Jialan thinks & feels: “this particular person matters to me - I choose him, I want him in my life, I trust him”

This episode was extremely hard to watch because just today, I learnt that #TanSongyun had also lost her mother suddenly in 2018. So I can only imagine the experience she drew from to play her scenes with such a great amount of empathy and depth for her character. #LuiXueYi was

I knew this dramatic woman would cause family drama. I've never trusted her and neither did the ML's mother. Remember when people got sick from the poison and ML's mother trusted LX (a maid) instead of anyone else in her family. And this is why! #AgainsttheCurrent

He has no other choice, but to take it to his grave too. And in this moment, this is where the Chinese title of #AgainsttheCurrent makes more sense, 蘭香如故.

Oof, the love I have for this drama, #AgainsttheCurrent , runs deep.

So for me, romance isn’t peripheral to what the drama is exploring

It clearly isn’t the only thing #AgainstTheCurrent is about - that’s for sure! 🙂

But successful & failed forms of intimacy are woven throughout the story

One thing the recent #cdrama #AgainstTheCurrent discussion has made me ask:

must a strong female-centred story & a fully realised mutual romance be zero-sum outcomes?

Surely, as Jinqi shows, egalitarian romantic love can itself be anti-hierarchical? (Thanks to @aimaiami.bsky.social for this point)

I think the drama is telling us there’s love there on her side. But it’s telling us subtly, and expecting us (as it has done so many times) to see and interpret it for ourselves. #AgainstTheCurrent isn’t spoon-feeding us every plot point; it’s respecting the viewers’ intelligence. I prefer this.

For me the smile she gave him - her whole face lit up - when she saw him arrive at her parents’ carrying the lotus roots, is a firm sign from the drama that she does care for him more than simply in a pragmatic acceptance kind of way. She also kept touching him as she moved about. #AgainstTheCurrent
