Psalm 119:36 (NKJV): Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to covetousness. The Hebrew word translated “covetousness” means “plunder”. It contains the idea of unjust gain. The word that is translated “testimonies” is contracted from a word that means “to duplicate or repeat”. There are many times that our desires and lusts get the best of us. We are all human after all. But there comes a point in our lives when we have to make the decision as to if we are going to let those lusts control us or not. Because when we let our lusts control us, then destruction follows. When you plunder, you create violence against someone or something. There is destruction in plundering. So, in essence, our desires and lusts left unchecked lead to destruction. Today’s verse is a reminder that we need help from the LORD our God to keep things in check. We need help from the LORD our God to help us focus on the things that bring life and love to people. We need help from the LORD our God to help us live lives that demonstrate the forgiveness and mercy that we so freely given to us. Sometimes it seems easier to let the desires and lusts take control, but the life that is lived out is one of death and destruction. Today, may we choose the way of life lived through the love and power of the LORD our God. Many the LORD incline each of our hearts more towards God.

James 4:4 (NKJV): Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. In the verses before today’s, James is chastising the people for letting their desires and lusts rule their lives. There is fighting among the believers. James tells them it is because each is trying to satisfy their own desires and lusts. There is strife because they are focused on their own pleasures. There is strife because jealousy is running amok. The people have lost their focus on Jesus. The people have lost their connection with the Holy Spirit. The people have lost their love of God. This is what happens when we center ourselves in the world. When we make everything about ourselves, we break relationship with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. James is calling the people and us back into that relationship. James is reminding us that there are things that are going to try to get between us and our Redeemer. James is reminding us that there are things that are going to try and get us away from living out of agape love. Today, may we hear the reminder and focus more on living out of agape love and showing the power of Jesus to others and ourselves.
