A great blue heron prepares to launch into flight at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical color photograph, a heron fills the frame in a hunched, downward-facing three-quarter profile, with its head turned to the right, revealing its left side. Its wings are raised and beginning to unfold as it prepares to leap into flight. The heron is perched on a curved tree branch intertwined with another fallen tree. Birds of all kinds seem to favor these two intertwined trees in the pond, which provide an ideal perch elevated above the water and relatively safe from most predators. The background is the opposite shoreline, softly blurred, with pond water visible across the lower portion of the frame.

In this horizontal color photograph, the viewer looks across a pond toward the opposite shoreline, which is reflected in the slightly rippled water. An old, weathered tree stump rises from the pond, surrounded by cattails; some still green, while others are turning yellow and brown as fall approaches. Perched atop the stump is a great blue heron in right profile, its neck tucked in and its head and beak horizontal in a relaxed pose.

A great blue heron pauses while getting into position to fish at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical color photograph, a heron perches on a branch that juts out of the water and enters the frame from just below center on the right. The branch, which is mostly submerged beneath a couple of feet of water, is littered with several large fishing lures and tangled masses of discarded fishing line. The heron has its back toward the camera but is turned enough to reveal its left profile, with its beak slightly open and its tongue visible. Early morning light illuminates the heron, highlighting its plumage against the surrounding water.

The background is pond water reflecting the brilliant blue sky overhead, characteristic of Colorado’s 300-plus days of sunshine each year.

A great blue heron perches atop two large, intertwined trees in a pond at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this horizontal color photograph, the viewer looks down upon two large fallen trees that are intertwined and locked together in the pond. Atop the highest tree trunk, a heron perches in left profile on one leg, with its neck and head tucked in. Its left foot is curled upward and remains visible, protruding from its plumage. The fallen trees are surrounded by water reflecting the overcast sky above. Despite the cloud cover, the entire scene is bathed in the warm light of the rising sun. In the foreground, rippled water adds depth and visual interest to the photograph.

In this vertical color photograph, a heron fills the frame in right profile with its legs cropped from view. Its neck is fully extended, though slightly curved, as it surveys its surroundings. Prairie grasses frame the foreground, while cattail reeds rise behind the bird. In the far background, pond water reflects the brilliant blue sky, providing a vibrant backdrop that complements the heron’s elegant form.

A great blue heron takes flight across a pond at one of my favorite nature areas in Longmont, Colorado.

A great blue heron takes flight across a pond at one of my favorite nature areas in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph, the heron is captured mid-liftoff; its beak slightly open, wings raised, and long legs trailing beneath it as it springs into the air.

I was anticipating the moment. The heron had been perched on the far-right log in the cattails beside a walking path. I noticed people approaching: first a fisherman who paused, then a woman walking her two small dogs. Right on cue, as they drew close enough, the heron launched into flight.

I thanked the woman and showed her the photograph.

The scene is a medium view of the pond, where soft reflections of clouds and patches of blue sky ripple across the water's surface. In the lower right, a weathered log emerges from newly growing cattails, angling leftward, with a small branch reaching toward—but not quite touching-the water. Both the log and branch are mirrored in the pond. Another log rises from the cattails at the far right, while a few delicate twigs break the surface near the upper center of the frame.

The image captures both the raw power and the quiet beauty of the moment.

A close-up of a great blue heron preening at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical color photograph, a heron’s head and neck fill the frame in right profile as it bends its head straight down to preen its neck feathers. The bird’s multicolored neck feathers part where the tip of its beak penetrates the upper layer of plumage. Its eye remains open as it concentrates intently on the task. The background is a brilliant blue sky, characteristic of Colorado’s 300-plus days of sunshine each year.

A beautiful portrait of a great blue heron engaged in the meticulous ritual of preening, an essential part of maintaining its plumage and well-being in the wetland habitat it depends upon.

In this vertical color photograph, a great blue heron perches on a log extending from the pond toward the camera. The heron is seen in left profile, with its neck and head turned back over its body and raised into the air as it carefully preens its feathers.

The background is entirely pond water, reflecting the orange-red color of a small Kubota excavator on the bank that is being used for construction. The unexpected reflection adds a striking warmth and unique character to the scene, creating a beautiful contrast between the heron’s natural surroundings and the human activity beyond the frame.

Illustration of a pine barrens tree frog on a blueberry branch, with grasspink orchids and a leaf from Sarracenia minor (a pitcher plant). Illustration has the text:

Humans aren’t the only risk these bog loving species must face. While we don’t usually think of fire when we think of wetlands, many wetland species, including some pines, need an occasional fire to help them thrive. While the fire might threaten the animal and insect species that live there, without it they would loose the wetland habitat they rely on.

Bogs and pocasins may get quite dry in spring or summer, and be prone to fires that keep the growth under control. These fires keep low-growing, sun-loving plants such as flytraps from being overshadowed by growing shrubs. Without such fires, the bogs and pocasins would slowly develop into a forest. Because of these fires, the soil has a high ash content. So, even though they are separate from the water table, some minerals may be present from the ash. However, these minerals are used by the moss itself to wage biological warfare in a bloodthirsty struggle for resources.

At the heart of what makes a bog, we find sphagnum moss. Each strand of moss is an individual plant. They do not have roots, just a main stem with drooping branches full of pointed, tube-like leaves. The leaves have large, empty cells that absorb and hold water, soaking it up like a sponge. It can hold up to 20 times its weight in water. This makes it very effective at filtering the water that passes through it, and it has learned to use this to its advantage.A chubby little tardigrade in sphagnum moss, with the moss enlarged to show the detail of a branch and cellular structure in the background with the text:

Like many plants, sphagnum mosses have a trick up their sleeves to give themselves an advantage to compete for resources. Slow growing plants like moss can quickly get overshadowed. However, the moss likes acidic conditions, and can even make conditions even more acidic by absorbing minerals plants love such as potassium and magnesium, and replacing these minerals with hydrogen ions. When we talk about acidity, we are talking about that very thing, how many hydrogen ions are in the environment. The more there are, the more acidic it is.

This not only means fewer minerals are available, but what nutrients are left may become unusable. Acidic water may cause minerals to form bonds with each other. When this happens, they are less likely to dissolve in water, so plant roots are unable to pull them up into the plant, starving the plant of the resources it needs for proper metabolism and building of cellular structures. Plants wither from hunger, and their roots burn in the acidity. Meanwhile, the moss thrives.

Most plants can’t survive in this environment but some, such as carnivorous plants, have adapted to fight back. In a mature bog, the moss rises in little mounds or hills. Plants who can handle the pressure find themselves a cozy home with few competitors, and plenty of moisture from what the moss holds. Some acid loving plants start taking over. This can be anything from grasses to shrubs such as cranberry and blueberry, and trees such as black spruce and birch. Orchids love bogs and pocasins, and are often found growing near carnivorous plants.
