#OnThisDay in 1946, #Tolkien writes to Stanley Unwin.

Tolkien expresses delight at the prospect of publishing "Farmer Giles of Ham" but cites academic commitments as a hindrance to providing more material promptly. While he acknowledging the possibility of completing more work, expresses

Today, the hobbits set out with Strider from the Prancing Pony Inn, entering the Chetwood, glimpsed here beyond Bree Hill. My layout of Bree is based on Professor Tolkien's diagram of the village. The description of the wood is lovely. #Tolkien #TheFellowshipoftheRing

Aqcuired another poster. Had never seen this before. 1974 Hobbit art by Rob Brown and Ken Sanders. Pen and ink drawing. Created using cross hatching. I think that's the term, maybe somebody artistic will know the correct term @joelmerriner.bsky.social #Tolkien #TheHobbit

The “Celtic‑thing” problem in #Tolkien legendarium comes mainly from the limited documentary evidence in his Celtic Library section. Much relevant material is not cited, so Celtic elements in his work are treated as analogies rather than as clearly documented sources.

Just when the hobbits need it most, they are "refreshed and encouraged" tonight at the hospitable Prancing Pony Inn. Big folk offering Little Folk-friendly rooms is something I think Tolkien really cared about. Food for thought!

#TolkienTrewsday #Tolkien Week 188 "Journey's End" - lyrical page with the words from Billy Boyd's "The Last Goodbye".

Words: tolkiengateway.net/wiki/The_Las... @tolkiengateway.net

Lyrical page created for #TolkienTrewsday with the words from Billy Boyd's "The Last Goodbye":

"I saw the light fade from the sky
On the wind I heard a sigh
As the snowflakes cover my fallen brothers
I will say this last goodbye

Night is now falling
So ends this day
The road is now calling
And I must away

Over hill and under tree
Through lands where never light has shone
By silver streams that run down to the Sea

Under cloud, beneath the stars
Over snow one winter’s morn
I turn at last to paths that lead home
And though where the road then takes me
I cannot tell
We came all this way
But now comes the day
To bid you farewell

Many places I have been
Many sorrows I have seen
But I don’t regret
Nor will I forget
All who took the road with me

Night is now falling
So ends this day
The road is now calling
And I must away

Over hill and under tree
Through lands where never light has shone
By silver streams that run down to the Sea

To these memories I will hold
With your blessing I will go
To turn at last to paths that lead home
And though where the road then takes me
I cannot tell
We came all this way
But now comes the day
To bid you farewell

I bid you all a very fond farewell."

🧙‍♂️ The Hobbit films evoke various reactions from fans, but for me the final song of the series, "The Last Goodbye" sung by Billy Boyd, is perfection - goodbye to the lost and friends who remain.

They say Tom is the master, and this morning he rescues the hobbits and teaches his most masterful lesson about breaking the barrow spell by leaving its hoard on the grass, free to all comers.
