there are secrets hidden in the way
that you reflect the cobbles,
revealing more
than what is on display.

the pigeon
revels in its special power,
and siphons water from the street —
sucks ripples
from your spinning head.

will you rebel?
prise stones from round your mind
and hurl them
as you guard the barricades?
send shards of granite flying,
and the slate-grey birds
in startled clouds
into the reeling pewter sky?

Sometimes the people we needed to show us how to grow up, never figured it out for themselves.
