An Oak Tree a Day
Not my best as this was far away but I ❤️ how deadwood serves as an avian lookout. Alerted to this tree bc crows always let you know & this one is telling the world that the hawk isn’t the boss around here. Also, hawk just ignored the noisy corvid. California #nativePlants #nature

A dead hollow tree on a slope of dried grasses and green native plants. There are two branches extending in a Y shape where a hawk perches at the end of one branch and a crow squawks inches behind

I was surprised by this patch of bright yellow-ox eye sunflowers finished blooming a few weeks ago. Then I remembered that visit to the @sarahmackattack.bsky.social shop in Fishtown and picking up swamp sunflowers. Or Fishtown sunflowers as I now call them.🌱 #nativeplants #flowers

Always nice to find a soft and comfortable place to rest on a warm day! A lovely Small Heath butterfly pauses for just a moment on a beautiful Carline Thistle seed head. 🫶🧡🌿📷

Happy new month!

A photography of a small Heath butterfly resting on a fluffy Carline Thistle seeded. The butterfly is small seen in side profile showing the underside of its forewing that has an orange glow and one eyespot at the tip. It's hindwing banded with brown, grey and cream. The butterfly is backlit with a bright green yellow background making the wings of the butterfly and seedhead glow.

🌼 tall rattlesnakeroot 🌿
Nabalus altissimus

#nativeplants #ecoregion71

three long, narrow, green flowerbuds hanging from a stem alongside one blooming composite flower (also pendant). there are short, dark green outer bracts at the base of the involucre, then a much longer, lighter set of inner bracts that run down the length of the corolla until just beyond where the light yellow, petal-like corollas of the flowerhead's five ray florets spread apart. there are no disk florets. five long styles descend from the pendant flowerhead, each pale yellow, one per floret. they subtly bifurcate by their tips, which are dusted with bright yellow pollen from their passage through the reddish tube of fused anthers that persists around the base of each style. a large, loose panicle of dangling flowerheads at the top of the stem of a tall rattlesnakeroot. the many branching stems tend to bear most of their composite flowers near their tips. many are still buds, shaped like little green torpedoes. the blooming flowerheads face the ground, their (usually) five light yellow ray florets flaring open to reveal a set of long, hanging styles. in the background, forest trees grow at the top of a gully's exposed rock outcrop. tall rattlesnakeroot growing among poison ivy on the forest floor; it stands around waist high. low on its stem, it bears alternate green leaves with five distinctively shaped deep palmate lobes. the leaves of these rattlesnakeroots are highly variable, often even on the same individual when comparing upper leaves to lower leaves. higher up, these leaves loose two of their lobes and form a T shape; near the top, there are some simple leaves just shaped like eggs. some flowers grow from leaf axils even fairly low on the stem, but most are higher up where the stem branches a few times to form a panicle. the flowers hang from their stems facing the ground, their light yellow petal-like rays spreading near flat. in the center of each flowerhead, there is a cluster of long styles, often dusted with bright yellow pollen at their tips, with a ring with reddish stamen tubes at their base.

The City of #Alameda has already replaced a lawn at City Hall with #NativePlants. “They put in this gorgeous landscape that’s water-wise, it’s drought-tolerant, it’s good for stabilizing the soil — it’s really cool,” says Nelsy Rodriguez from the East Bay Municipal Utility District.

The Garden in a Box is planted, edged, and mulched. (Wood mulch this time because it's under a tree.) I have a few plants I started from seed still to plant. And I need one replacement plant for something that didn't survive summer. I only lost 1 out of 35 plants, so not bad.

An Oak Tree a Day
Well there’s a sycamore in the foreground but that’s def an oak background. This isn’t the wilderness or even Oregon. SoCal WUI (Wildland Urban Interface) & if you’re not paying attention you might miss how intertwined we are w #nature. Pic taken from a parking lot.🙀 #nativePlants

Two deer, one grazing and the other looking up from a sloping area with native plants in the background and landscaped rosemary in the foreground. The picture is bordered by a mature sycamore tree. A very cute deer with very large ears looks at the camera.
