Oil on canvas titled "Tanoo, Q.C.I." by Emily Carr, 1913, signed lower right. A landscape-format painting depicting the abandoned Haida village of Tanoo on Haida Gwaii (then known as the Queen Charlotte Islands), painted during one of Carr's documentary journeys to record Indigenous villages and totem poles of the BC coast. Three tall totem poles rise vertically against a billowing pale sky of cream, grey, and soft pink, dominating the composition and occupying the left, centre, and right of the canvas. Each pole is carved with a stack of figures — faces, beaks, wings, and crests rendered in Carr's characteristic blend of Post-Impressionist brushwork and careful attention to the formal vocabulary of Haida carving — in muted tones of grey-green, teal, red, and brown. Between and behind the poles, a long low traditional longhouse with a pale grey-green painted façade stretches across the middle ground, its front wall decorated with painted ovoid forms. Dense Pacific coastal forest — dark conifers and lighter deciduous growth — rises behind the buildings, and in the foreground, logs and rounded river stones lie along a sandy shore. The whole scene is rendered in Carr's lush, active painterly style, the brushwork energetic and the palette dominated by the greens and grey-greens of the BC coast. The village was already largely abandoned by the time Carr visited, and the painting is both a work of documentary record and an elegiac response to what colonial policies and epidemic disease had done to Haida communities.
