As the party’s spectral forms hover over their decimated bodies, they feel detached from time. Has it been only a few moments? Weeks? They aren’t entirely certain. After a little while though, a Non Player Character (NPC) they befriended comes looking for them, only to find their remains and ghosts. The NPC knows of someone with the ability to revive the party, but it will take some time for the NPC to reach this person. The journey is sure to be filled with danger, so they ask the party to help protect them along the way. This NPC need not be the helpless sack of flour you’d usually carry around for escort missions. They have their own experiences and abilities that helped them get through life. Party members can interact with the NPC, learning more about their friend and potentially the world around them. If you want to limit the party’s ability to physically intervene, then they can provide words of wisdom or guidance to aid their NPC friend. They can even influence the NPC’s development and character arc, turning an otherwise timid support character into someone with more confidence. Or maybe their friend is extremely confident and reckless, and along the way the party discovers that this is simply a mask used to hide their personal struggles. The “Deus Ex Friend-ina” encourages social interaction, exploration, and provides an opportunity for players to learn more about a character they’ve become familiar with. It can also provide a little bit of down time for the party to collect themselves after being defeated."
