19th-century-CE building from French Polynesia, made from coral #AdoorableThursday

A new method to date the coral blocks provides an unprecedented glimpse into the lives of Polynesian Catholic converts in the colonial era.

Remains of a coral house, with no roof, in a forest. The door and window apertures and corners are made with rectangular blocks, whilst the walls are infilled with more uneven blocks.

The north door at St Edward’s Church, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cotswolds, has an ancient and knobbly yew tree on each side of the door. It is thought it may have inspired Tolkien for “Doors of Durin.”

Tolkien was a professor at Oxford University which is not far away and he was known to have visited the Cotswold and Stow in particular.
The Doors of Durin are in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
This church porch was built about 300 years ago with the yew saplings planted at the same time. They are now part of the architraves of the door.

For #adoorableThursday the (Welf?) 'lion portal' from Königslutter minster (burial site of Emperor Lothar III, Empress Richenza and Duke Henry the Proud). Romanesque with 19th-cent. restoration and some serious neo-medieval ironmongery. My photo.

The rear entrance door of a local nail salon. The door has an illustration of a left hand with decorative fingernails, and holding a pink rose bud. Several green sandbags are stacked on the ground in front of the door. There is a storm door that is propped open with an old portable radio.
