Hindenburg’s birthday!!!

Almost found a way in #WW1 against great odds.

@thegreatwargroup.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 8:38 PM

Born today Paul von Hindenburg! Initially commanded in the east. Crushed the Russians at Tannenberg. From 1916 commanded all German forces. National hero. Wrote a best selling memoir after the war. Served as President of Germany and unsuccessfully tried to stem the Nazi tide.

Black and white photo of Hindenburg against a grayish background. Distinctive mustache. Wearing Iron Cross and numerous decorations on chest. Braids on shoulders. Looking careworn and. tired.

Born today the great Ferdinand Foch! The Marshal of France who led the Allies to victory. Vowed at an early age to see Alsace and Lorraine returned to France and he succeeded. He worried about another rise of Germany. Honored and renowned worldwide. Buried next to Napoleon!

Color photo of Foch looking to his right. In a garden with a wall and vines or trees behind him. Traditional blue uniform with decorations, and red hat with gold braiding. He holds a can or walking stick. He dons his traditional mustache.

Sébastien Japrisot, Un long dimanche de fiançailles (1991).
#Lecture #Litterature #SebastienJaprisot #WW1 #PGM #Booksky #Attentionaufil

Couverture du livre dans la collection Folio.Quatrième de couverture :
« Janvier 1917.

This lovely maquette in the musée d’Aquitaine speaks to themes of the legacy of #1GM #WW1 and loss.
The sculptor, Edmond-Ernest Chrétien, served in a medical unit during the war. Post-war, he was commissioned to design several war memorials in the Gironde.
[More as ever in the ALT text].

Dans le sillon (“In the Furrow”)
Edmond-Ernest Chrétien (1882-1945)
1924
Bronze. Cire perdue Leblanc-Barbedienne & fils, Paris
Don des Amis du musée d'Aquitaine
2016.2.1

Maquette statue of a ploughman who has paused and removed his hat in front of the body of an unknown French soldier that he has just uncovered while ploughing. The soldier’s casque Adrian is clearly visible in the soil.
The sculpture reminds us of the soldiers who died during the 1914-1918 war and reminds us that during this deadly conflict, the earth became the burial place of hundreds of thousands of soldiers.
Even today the bodies of those caught up in the conflict are still discovered in the fields of conflict in Northern France and Belgium.
This bronze may be related to a public monument or aveteran commission.
