Oh Zach, you’re gonna have a lot of heartbreak in your future

#writesky #wipsnips #writingcommunity #booksky

His friend had been uncharacteristically quiet since
Cleo's location had been discovered, though it wasn't hard to guess why. Anyone with eyes could see that Noah was head over heels for Cleo. He'd caught his friend staring longingly more times than he could count. It bothered him at first that both of his best friends were so clearly intended to be paired together, while he was completely in the dark about his own future, but the arrival of Lana had put those feelings to rest. Granted, she was a bit abrasive towards him, but for whatever reason, that fact only drew him in more. He wanted to earn her approval. Unfortunately, it seemed that the most surefire way to do so would be to assist in the capture of his friends. He was fairly certain that Noah's personal feelings would prevent him from actively subduing Cleo-not that Zach was eager to do it himself.
He simply accepted the mission as an inevitability.
Someone was going to have to sedate her, and frankly he trusted himself to be more gentle about it than Lana. If he managed to prove himself useful on this mission, she may even begin viewing him in a different light.
They'd all been outfitted with a sedation injector which could be applied quickly and painlessly, as well as a stun baton which emitted micropulse vibrations throughout the nervous system and caused enormous amounts of pain until the target lost consciousness. He doubted if Sherman Wright would approve the use of any tool that would cause permanent harm to his only daughter, but he would still rather not have to use the stun baton.Cover for The Earthlings!

Yay new #WIPSnips week!

Since folks liked the sni[ abt Liese yesterday, I thought I'd share a little bit more about poor Liese's journey.

Leo has brought Paige to her place to grab a few things, after escaping the Venatori at Midnight's Ball.

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #BookSky

A dark image with white text that reads:

Paige’s breathing hitched. She stopped dead a few steps from the second landing, her pulse speeding up again.
     "Leo," she whispered.
He gripped her hand, then slowly crept around her. The door to one of the apartments was ajar. He couldn't smell anything past the psychedelic-purple fragrance of the cleaner, but he could hear heartbeats on the floors above and below.
No heartbeat on this floor, and no post-mortal currents.
     "It's empty," he said.
"Empty?" Her voice shook, tears edging her eyes.
Oh no. "Who's supposed to be there?"
     "Liese," she replied.
"Wait here," he said, before dashing into her apartment at full speed.
The apartment smelled worse than the hallway, the caustic scent of Venatori poison still slightly detectable, but it was no longer hovering in the air.
This is bad. The Venatori came here first.

- From NO SKY LIKE MIDNIGHT, by Nora Shear

The word "pulse" is in bold pink font. There are star decorations in every corner and a meteor decoration above the text.

“I like it,” she said quickly. And she did. Having a woman in her life made her heart flutter. “You can just be kinda… intense sometimes.”

 “Just being me.”

A chill crept up Tharaiyelagh’s spine. “Are there such troubles ahead?”

Reaching out, Tsai-Van engulfed Tharaiyelagh’s hands in his enormous ones. “Oh, child,” he said softly. “Always.” His gaze pinned Tharaiyelagh in place, quickening his pulse and drying his mouth.

Nin has stopped her horse to offer a ride to the handsome stranger walking by the side of the road. Now she can see how tall he really is.

Silhouette of an oak tree against a green background.

Text: A Sylvan Tale #WIPSnips "pulse"

Turning around while seated on her horse, Nin finally gazed at the stranger. He was handsome. Far more handsome than Alan, and he was the most handsome man in Oakdore. The stranger had a neat beard that wasn’t too long and a smile that dazzled her with straight white teeth. But it was his eyes that made her heart pound as if someone was chopping wood in her chest with the sharp and thunderous impact of each beat. She could not tell if they were green or brown, for it seemed they changed colors between the two as he moved through the dappled shade. She felt hypnotized by their stunning vibrancy as he unapologetically stared back at her with an intensity that temporarily rendered her mute.
As he walked up to the horse, she finally got a sense of how tall he was. Barley was eighteen hands high, and Nin was as tall as the horse at her withers. No one except Alan was taller than Nin in Oakdore, and that was by only a few inches. This stranger’s shoulder came up to Barley’s withers, meaning he was a full head taller that Nin. Standing next to the horse, Nin gawked, her mouth agape and her pulse now beating faster than a drum during a fast jig.

In Prophecy 71, the MCs return from a capital-Q Quest, with Zedenko tied/roughed up. Gallara has been trying to overcome her culturally-ingrained racism, especially after a bad slip with Alakshi, and hopes her mind charm spell will help here.

When they finally made it to the city gates, a couple of guards jumped to block them before they even got close. “Who are you, and who’s that with you?” one of them shouted. “Holy shit, what did you do to - Wait, is he a half-elf? Oh, well then, he probably -”
Gallara looked both guards in the eye, and magic pulsed in her skull again as she leaned in. “Half-elves are just as deserving of respect as anyone,” she hurried, “and the vast majority are nice people. This one is an outlier, and that’s only because of extreme circumstances. Don’t you agree?” Part of her wondered if maybe she was trying too hard.
“Oh, yes, definitely,” the human guard said, and the elven one nodded as they both eased their posture. “My cousin dated one for a little while, and he was polite as you please.”
“Don’t forget it. Now can we pass?” She glanced back at Alakshi, who looked uncomfortable. Crap, she was trying too hard. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I bent over to feel his wrist for a #pulse. There wasn't one.
Still kneeling, I looked up at Sophie. "What the hell is this?"

Sophie's eyes narrowed, returning my anger with her own. Challenging me to go further she replied, "Practice?" #WIPSnips #booksky #skywriting

I freeze as I see a woman look out of ‘my’ window. She's cradling a mug in her hands for warmth, just like I used to. For a moment our eyes meet before she steps back out of view behind the drapes and nets. I don't know what to think. All I can hear is the blood rushing in my ears and nothing else. My mind is racing and my heart is pounding in my chest.

Between her numbing butt and her shaking limbs and too many spent emotions, Viv must’ve misheard. In her drunken state, Caden’s words morphed into some sentiment she craved. Who didn’t want to be wanted by any man, but by this sexy as a stripper, sweet as taffy, soft as a Squishmallow man. Even with the spreading wetness on Caden’s sweater from her tears and the snow, even with the increasing cold and wind despite the storm slowing, Viv couldn’t be happier anywhere else than here, leaning her cheek against Caden’s freezing chest, listening to his fluctuating heartbeat, breathing in his cedary scent.

Except she wasn’t that drunk. Not really. The cold, the tears cleared the alcohol from her system better than ten cups of coffee. And this fantasyland had to end now that the snow tapered off. Caden offered another few days, offered to stay, in fact, until the wedding ended, but that was too big an ask. He helped longer than she imagined and for that he earned her eternal gratitude.

My heart pounded so hard, I could feel the vein in my neck pulsing and hoped she didn’t see it. She asked if her new Excel file made sense. I squinted at it, trying to find some way to act normal and like this was okay when it was yet more unnecessary garbage. #wipsnips

The agony pulsed up and down its prone, pathetic form, worsening for what felt like hours before the pain subsided again. The body could only lay there, sucking in deep, unsteady breaths, waiting for this nightmare to end.

The Body could only wince in pain as it realized just how much every part of it hurt. The agony pulsed up and down its prone, pathetic form, worsening for what felt like hours before the pain subsided again. The body could only lay there, sucking in deep, unsteady breaths, waiting for this nightmare to end.

Amidst the pain was an overwhelming sense of unbridled rage, coupled with dread and sorrow that sang as if it’d been struck like a tuning fork, the note cacophonous and unbearable. A desire to run, to scream, to cry, to thrash about and resist whatever hell had befallen it possessed its mind so deeply— yet it could not move. All the body could do was try to make sense of this pain, of the wrongs that had surely occurred, of the abandonment that had surely sunk serrated claws deep into its flesh. Indeed, its mind swam with these possibilities, and it longed to return to the world of the dead for just a little longer. Just until the pain abated…

And then it heard a sound.

New week, new words. Here’s a #WIPSnips for pulse.

Joe sets the paper aside. He manages to corral the kids out of the kitchen before he takes his place beside his wife and helps out, passing Kate a glass, a fork, a dish… "You know how I feel about this," he says. "It reflects poorly on me."

"Because you don’t believe in psychic phenomena, or because I’m dabbling in the dark arts of the satanic?" Her eyes meet his, her brow cocked just so.

"Anne has become a bad influence."

"And you're living in fear. In fear of losing votes."

"Josephine has a hold on the neck of this town. Unfortunately, because of it, she knows how to read its pulse."

From Book 2 of Resist. You all get to see Ferris lose his mind after the Circle captured Rollan.

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Quivering in the shadows of the Obsidian Sector, a soldier begged for his life. Unable to move as fear petrified him, he watched as his fellow servicemen rose from the ground without a pulse. Ferris’s vengeful eyes turned on him. Unable to control himself, the soldier began to blubber as did those before him. Like Ort’s men and the magistrates from centuries ago. Humans felt invincible until they realized there was a fate worse than death.
Five thralls surrounded Ferris as he licked the blood from the thin blade. Archaic, it still filled his body with euphoria to take blood directly from a body. The sixth thrall rose with a lumbering jolt. Clean and satisfied, Ferris was prepared to exact his revenge. If Rollan wasn’t alive, then everything would die. Last time Ferris held back. This time, he didn't want to.

From my Epic Fantasy novel Demon’s Bargain. Kahyla sought refuge from an assassin on the ship Despard was guarding. Has she chosen the wrong man to trust?

A figure limped between snow-shrouded counting tables. “I know she’s up there,” said the man in the familiar clipped accent of Huxen. “Send her down and we can split the bounty.”
Kahyla cringed against the ribs of the ship’s wall as Despard rose to the top of the gangplank.
“What bounty? Why do you want her?” He drew two daggers and held them at his sides.
The ship’s rigging groaned as the wind pulsed down the river. Balanced on the narrow board, Despard tensed on flexed knees.
“A smaller haul for her location,” said the voice, crunching steps growing louder and closer. “Bigger payout for proof of kill on all three Tamrins.”
Kahyla scanned Despard’s face but could read nothing in the line of his moonlit jaw.
“You’d pay in advance?” said Despard.
Oh Parkith, how could she have misjudged Despard? So many evenings of quiet joy but now haggling over the price of betrayal? Where on the ship could she hide? To jump into the river to escape would be as certain to kill her as the assassin’s knife.
The board creaked as the man stepped on the bottom slat. “Don’t be foolish. I could only pay for the location bounty up front,” he said with a hypnotic purr. “But if you wait, the second payout is so much better. Decide how much money you want.”
“Kahyla decides,” Despard said quietly, his knife glinting as he twisted it and caught her eye.
Sleeping saints, what was he saying? Decide - this man’s life or hers?
She breathed cold air. A nod.
“No bed warmer on a cold night then,” Despard said loudly for the assassin to hear. He stepped off the ramp, leaving the path open. “Come and get her.”

It’s early morning and the crew reports in, accounting for their earnings before departing for the day. I catch a scent on one of my corner guys.
“Arturo, wait,” I say, and he freezes. I walk over, and he begins to sweat. A few of the boys pause. Fear and curiosity fill the air.
Arturo remains motionless as I draw a small plastic baggie from his jacket pocket.
“What the fuck is this?” I ask.
“Sorry, I forgot I had it,” he answers, but his pulse says otherwise. I’m angry and insulted. My fangs descend.
“Be still,” I command him, rolling up his sleeve. He doesn’t move and couldn’t if he wanted to as I bite into his arm just below his wrist in front of everyone. I swallow once, twice, and then stop and raise his arm to show him the little puncture wounds.
“Think about this when you imagine stealing from me,” I tell him. Terror is plain on his face. “You’re fired.”
He staggers away, clutching his bleeding arm. I wipe my mouth, then hand the bag to Lisa. “Catalog that, please,” I tell her, and she nods obediently.

No More Mister Nice Guy - Chapter 17

After beating Poltergeist, Ethan and Purebred try to see if he's still alive or not.

#WIPSnips

“Oh god…” Purebred groaned. She turned away, and Ethan was worried she was going to start vomiting, but instead she just huddled up in a corner of the alleyway. Ethan leaned down and pressed his fingers to the side of the squashed man’s neck.

“Holy shit,” Ethan muttered in surprise. “He’s alive!”

“What?!” Like a dog smelling food, Purebred scrambled to her feet and bounded over to the two men. “He’s alive?!”

“Yup. Still got a pulse and everything. He must’ve used his powers to soften the blow…” Though that was all Poltergeist managed to do, seeing the damage his body suffered.

“So… what do we do now?” Poltergeist asked hesitantly. “We can’t just leave him here…”

“Says who?!” Ethan asked indignantly. The pain in his puncture wounds seemed to flare up as he glared at the werewolf. “He attacked us! Asshole deserves whatever happens to him!” Purebred said nothing, but the whimpers she let out made the villain think of an injured puppy. Her pathetic demeanor made Ethan want to lash out, but he couldn’t decide whether he should smack Purebred on the nose or cave in Poltergeist’s head.

For the #Sniptober day 12

No loose selfs, but 2 selfs as part of a longer word, in a snip only a few hours after the other one for the #WIPsnips, both part of the panic attack narrative when Pyra and Ronan arrive in Héva, the land where men don't exist...

‘Are you okay now?’ She asked, very careful. He seemed to be better indeed, but he was still a bit pale and shaky.
He sat up on his bed. ‘I think so. I’m so sorry.’
‘You are sorry? Why?’
‘I really screwed up, didn’t I?’
‘You? If there’s anyone who should be sorry, it’s me. It was me who put you through all this with my impulsive plans. It’s my fault we got on the aeroplane to her, and I took the risk to expose us to get help. I am the one to blame for everything. You are the victim of my horrible life choices.’
‘Don’t call it that. It just happened. And I was weak.’
She sat next to him and very carefully laid her arm on his shoulder.
‘Weak? You? You just had a heavy full-blown panic attack. Very understandable too if you suddenly find yourself in a country where men don’t officially exist, and that as a shy Nation boy…’
‘But it’s inexcusable. And now we’re locked up in this guesthouse thing. If I had had more self-control we might have been able to hide ourselves…’
‘Ah, I don’t think so, that wouldn’t have worked. This world is too strange for that. We don’t know the rules of anything here. I wouldn’t even know where we’d sleep or find food, or how to get a flight back. At least we have food and a place to sleep now, and they will do their best to get us back.’
‘If you look at it like that…’
‘And you know, a supposedly strong Nation man is the last thing I could use now to be honest. It would get us in much more trouble if you were an Alpha. You need to do your best to look like a harmless kid who’s impressed by their culture, not a masculine macho boy who enjoys his morning drill exercises while fantasising about killing Nation enemies. Harmless is really what we need to go for.’
His breath was a lot calmer now, so she took her arm away and jumped off the bed, in the direction of the bookshelf.
‘So, what do we have here? I suppose we’ll have a lot of time to waste here before we get home.’
