"Avenue of Pollard Birches and Poplars" (also commonly referred to as Lane with Trees and One Figure or Figure on a Road), created by the legendary Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh in March 1884.

The Medium: Van Gogh executed this piece using a reed pen and iron gall ink on tan laid paper. Over more than a century, the iron gall ink (which was originally black) has naturally aged into a deep brown, giving the drawing its warm, golden-brown antique tone.
The Style: The drawing highlights Van Gogh’s mastery of graphic texture through intensive hatching and cross-hatching. The strict vertical lines of the poplars and birches merge overhead into a dense canopy, creating a dramatic, cathedral-like perspective that frames a single solitary figure walking down the center path.
The Inspiration: Van Gogh drew this during his period living in Nuenen, Netherlands, and is believed to have been inspired by the melancholic themes of the poem "Tristement" (Sadly) by French writer François Coppée.
Current Location: The original masterpiece is housed in the prints and drawings collection at The Art Institute of Chicago.
