Agree with all of this. I feel like saying “you don’t need to” can be flippant and exclusionary. At the same time I feel guilty and self-excluded by saying “a sukkah is impossible for me.” I’m grateful for those who reimagine the rituals in inclusive ways. #ParshaChat
As you know, there are many ways to "afflict yourself." The day centers the importance of prayer and charity and repentance. And I go on a media fast too-- no internet, no social media. But your health has to come first & how best to observe Yom Kippur is something only you can decide. #ParshaChat
A2: That's interesting! I haven't thought of that as a potential caring about people problem — are there things that you think might be done about that? #ParshaChat
One thing I appreciate about Jewish ritual is how much of it still works in years when I'm not particularly feeling it. #ParshaChat
(So I don't mean to imply an opinion in either direction about whether you should fast, that's a very personal kind of decision.) #ParshaChat
*That said*, this is making me think about how there's often a lot of power in, as a disabled people, laying claim to things that other people want us to be exempt from. Including when there's some risk involved in doing the thing anyway, you know? It's our Torah and our world.

And at this point, I don't feel bad about it. I abstain from the other things on Yom Kippur, because that's safe for me. #ParshaChat
One year, I had a really powerful experience going through the al chet and thinking about the line of "sins involving food or drink" and realizing that for me that year, *refraining* from eating and drinking would have been the sin.

Most years, including this year, it's not safe for me to fast on Yom Kippur. And so I don't.
I loved that. Who wrote this? Who made it? Who babysat? Who did chores? #ParshaChat
I modify the fast. I can’t fast from either food or water. This year my modifications was not only smaller portions but also no color or spice: ie. oatmeal, tuna salad. #ParshaChat
And I'm thinking about all the stuff we noticed the year we were asking about perspectives — it made me really notice all the people who would have *had* to have been in the room or aware of events etc who aren't mentioned directly. #ParshaChat
Whoa!!! And … twins? What about triplets? #ParshaChat
I think it will definitely be harder some weeks than others, but I think it might be fun to find plant and/or animal lenses on the less obvious ones! Because I think there always has to be a plant or animal involved in *some* way. #ParshaChat

I can see that interpretation as possible, but I interpret it slightly differently: maybe I don't have to, but I can choose to. For example, I've got a ton of autoimmune diseases and I'm probably not supposed to fast. And yet, each year, I choose to do it. I'm glad I can. #ParshaChat
I don't know if there's a specific word for a double yolk. The way you refer to a two year old kid has an -ayim ending though! #ParshaChat
