H.B. Barnum is a US #OneHitWonder honoree! Barnum earned US #OneHitWonder honors in 1961 when his lush instrumental “Lost Love” spent 1 week on the US #Billboard #Top40 at #35… and promptly fell off the following week. #HBBarnum #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Before H.B. Barnum became one of LA’s most respected arrangers/producers, he was singing in The Dootones with his childhood friend, Ron Barrett. The group didn’t last long, but it was an early training ground for the two future behind-the-scenes figures in LA music. #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Friends living on the same LA street, The Duals went to famed arranger/producer H.B. Barnum about recording “Stick Shift.” Barnum passed, but steered them toward his friend Ron Barrett, who had started the small Star Revue label. #HBBarnum #RonBarrett #TheDuals #OneHitWondered

In 1961, two black 19-year-olds stepped into a recording studio and created one of the foundational tracks of early instrumental surf/hot rod music, beating The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean to the charts. The Duals were lead guitarist Henry Bellinger & Johnny Lageman on rhythm guitar. #OneHitWondered

The week of October 2, 1961, LA surf/hot rod duo The Duals earned US #OneHitWonder honors when their influential, instrumental car record, “Stick Shift,” entered the US #Billboard #Top40 at #33. The single spent six weeks on the chart, peaking at #25. #TheDuals #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

The 1998 film A Night at the Roxbury carried the SNL routine into theaters. For many listeners, the opening beat became a cue to imitate the Butabi brothers. “What Is Love” now carried a comic image alongside its original plea for love without pain. #NightAtTheRoxbury #SNL #OneHitWondered

Jim Carrey joined Ferrell & Kattan on May 18, 1996, taking the head-bobbing to ridiculous extremes. The SNL routine made Haddaway’s single instantly recognizable to another audience. #JimCarrey #WillFerrell #ChrisKattan #SNL #OneHitWondered

“What Is Love” got a second life in 1996 when SNL paired it with Will Ferrell & Chris Kattan’s Butabi brothers... clueless clubgoers bobbing their heads and striking out with women. A dance-floor worldwide hit became part of a recurring joke. #SNL #WillFerrell #ChrisKattan #OneHitWondered

Haddaway’s follow-up single, “Life” was also a big Top 10 hit in most of Europe… but topped out at an oh-so-close #41 in America (coming one spot away from costing Haddaway his US #OneHitWonder honors!) #Haddaway #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

"What Is Love" by Haddaway fused driving Eurodance synths with soulful, gospel-influenced vocal delivery. The single stormed to #1 in over 13 countries and peaked at #2 in the UK. In America, the track crossed over onto mainstream pop radio, peaking at #11 on the US #Top40 #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Before it became a SNL pop-culture punchline, Haddaway’s “What Is Love” became one of the defining Eurodance hits of the ‘90s.It was his only US #Top40 hit, but the Trinidadian-German vocalist built a broader career overseas, where several follow-ups found success. #Haddaway #SNL #OneHitWondered

The week ending October 2, 1993, Trinidadian-German vocalist Haddaway earned US #OneHitWonder honors when his energetic Eurodance classic “What Is Love” entered the US #Billboard #Top40 at #29. The single spent 19 weeks on the chart, peaking at #11. #Haddaway #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Tom Petty isn’t a one-hit wonder!!! You’re right… but he did provide backing vocals on a single that earned solo US #OneHitWonder honors for Dwight Twilley in 1984. That single, “Girls,” spent ten weeks on the US #Billboard #Top40, peaking at #18. #DwightTwilley #TomPetty #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

#OTD in 2017, Tom Petty’s family, following a do-not-resuscitate order, removed him from life support after tests showed no brain activity… He passed away later that evening. Petty had gone into cardiac arrest the previous evening at his home in Malibu, California. He was 66. #OneHitWondered

Interestingly, in Celebrity Big Brother 4 (UK), which ran January 5-27, 2006, producers planted a non-celebrity, Chantelle Houghton, & told her to swagger like a rock star. Her cover story: lead singer of a girl group named Kandy Floss… Colin Campsie, evidently, wrote the song used. #OneHitWondered

After “Into You” stalled at #58, Giant Steps continued working together briefly, recording several new tracks in 1989… including “What We’re Made Of” with funk legend Larry Graham, but a planned second album never materialized. By 1990, Giant Steps were finished. #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Giant Steps scored one more US #Hot100 chart entry with their follow-up single "Into You,” which topped out at #58. The single was the logical follow-up to “Another Lover,” as it was also written by Colin Campsie, George McFarlane & Gardner Cole, with Cole again producing. #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Pop culture gave “Another Lover” by Giant Steps an extra boost when it was prominently featured over the opening titles of the 1989 Patrick Dempsey comedy film Loverboy. #PatrickDempsey #Loverboy #GiantSteps #OneHitWondered

Warner Bros. signed Gardner Cole as a recording artist… By then, he was already better known as a songwriter, producer & multi-instrumentalist than as a solo singer. His only #Hot100 entry was “Live It Up,” which peaked at #91 in 1988 (#13 on Billboard’s dance chart). #OneHitWondered #MusicSky
