#LTHEChat A4Travelling in shd be rewarded with interaction, not a lecture. Interactive workshops, dialogic seminars, time to be in the canteen together - and perhaps that module that rewards you for being a peer mentor or belonging to the SU or being in a Club or Society or something else glorious?

A4
Engaging teaching
Connected transportation links
Facilities that support them to remain on campus
Opportunities to connect with course peers or other activities e.g. societies, volunteering

Interesting insights Santanu

Thanks for sharing

I agree on co-creation, but getting the message across is still difficult, especially with a high proportion of introverts (I am an introvert), though snowballing can help #LTHEchat

Possibly attending a talk by a prestigious guest speaker, something eg with employers where as a student you have the chance to make a good impression. Conversely a straight didactic lecture could work best as a video recording #LTHEchat 2/2

Q5 - For students who are rarely or never on campus, what’s the equivalent of the conversation after class, and who’s designing it?

Reply with A5 #LTHEChat and your response @columfromcork.bsky.social

A4 Ah, I was a commuter student, so if I learnt something new or interacted with someone on my course, saw my Uni mates, that was worth it. Often however, it was just a diadactic lecture with little interactivity in class. Probably one reason I ended up in #EdDev type roles. #LTHEChat

A3 - in my context teaching on a PG Cert in HE, it's

Have I failed to engage or provide a supportive learning environment?

Have they felt uncomfortable undertaking the peer learning activities?

Are staff having to prioritise things other than their own professional development?

agree Sue, making sure that time on campus is seen as valuable and also that it's not too stressful to fit other things (work, care responsibilities) #LTHEchat

A4 #LTHEchat ooh I've had this q multiple times & indeed been in that position myself. Not an exhaustive list but some interactive exercise where participation's a key part of learning, an opportunity to work face-to-face with peers, hands-on sessions such as performances or science/tech labs 1/2

@suebecks.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:38 PM

They have the same demands as all students. #LTHEchat

I don't care whether the room is virtual or F2F, but being in the room should matter. It's about human relationships, supporting each other, playing with ideas together - and co-constructing knowledge together. Learning is not a spectator sport but a team event ? #LTHEChat

@columfromcork.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:37 PM

That's a sad situation for that student Kate

And not uncommon unfortunately

The sacrifices some students are forced to make

A4 This is compounded by the need to work for many students. Partially, the answer has to be effective timetabling and accepting days on campus need to factor in minimising number of days on campus. Not ideal but pragmatic #LTHEchat By the way I know timetabling is a nightmare headache

@louiserees.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:36 PM

A2 - my students are staff. They may be going to their next lecture, preparing for another, going to a meeting, supervising session, going to grab food etc. #lthechat

@martinrich106.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:35 PM

I had several conversations with friends from outside HE where I mentioned low attendance & subdued participants for Friday afternoon classes in November & they typically remarked that they'd expect this, however good the teaching #LTHEchat

@suebecks.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:34 PM

A4 In addition to a timetabled class and hopefully more than one, it could be attending a peer group meeting, a society or sport activity, a careers event or time spent in the library or quiet space to work on an assignment. #LTHEchat

@louiserees.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:34 PM

A1 - in the refectory (yes, old term for cafe- but for us we were lucky to have a specific library for natural sciences and while we should have been quiet, to hats where I remember good conversations at least starting! #lthechat

@penarthkate.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:33 PM

A4 - I chatted with a student who could only afford to by a train ticket a couple of times a week so they had to be strategic, come in on the days there were several classes. Solo classes on a whole day had to be sacrificed 😢

Yes - and reaching out to students who have missed sessions is not surveillance but care, sometimes they are nervous about returning... and I don't care if the class is online or F2F, but I do want students to have time together to bond, and create learning together. #LTHEChat
