The worst trends in CFB coverage are back In national coverage of the sport, there's some growing trends that are miserable and especially prominent after Week 1. They stink and should be either ignored (don't feed the trolls!) or shot down: #1: Lost Bet Defending "That was still the right side, I'd bet it again". This is not an anti-gambling publication by any means. But talking about games through this lens stinks. It takes actual, interesting things to talk about - turnover luck, field position, special teams, explosive plays vs. sustaining long drives - and boils them down to talking points where someone makes them and their bets the main character. Looking at games with this lens ends up treating the chaos of the sport like it's a defect. "I would have been proven correct if it wasn't for these college kids making critical errors". How dumb does this sound when you boil it down? You're gambling on a sport known for its unpredictably and volatility. When you take the losing side, take the loss, laugh about it, and move on to more interesting ways to analyze games. #2: Early Calling the Season Another easy engagement bait topic - podcasts or articles proclaiming that someone's season is finished after Week 1. Call me Dabo Swinney, but I hate this stuff! (Clemson does have big problems, you can probably write them off). But seriously, I'm talking about sweeping proclamations, like "Are the ACC at-large bid hopes dead" or "Auburn isn't going bowling" after one regular season week. Why in the world would you think we have a clue already what's happening this season? A year ago the future 16-0 national champs had only beaten Old Dominion by 13 points.
