The Great Cormorant, with a long, grey beak tipped with a downward-pointing hook, looks almost prehistoric. At the base of the beak, especially the flower part, there is some yellow colouration, which in this image looks very bright with the sun on it. The bird's eye is a sea-green colour, with a small, black pupil and thin, black rim. Behind the eye and the base of the beak is a pale brown patch, with the rest of the bird's head and neck (and its body, only part of which is visible in this image) being covered with very dark brown, almost black, plumage.

For today’s #BirdOfTheDay main theme #BestBeaks by @helenbennett.bsky.social I’ve chosen the Oystercatcher. They always look to me as though they’re carrying a carrot 🤣 but they are amazingly strong, efficient beaks used as either hammer or chisel for opening shellfish #ECK 🪶
