Excited to share this new survey of laws on material deemed "harmful to minors" and the defenses for libraries! These laws have been weaponized to support book bans in many states. We hope this survey is useful for librarians and library advocates fighting for the freedom to read. #BannedBookWeek

#BannedBookWeek - 📖 By my 21st birthday, I'd read 4 'bad' books--2 banned by the Irish Censorship Board, 1 by the UK's Obscene Publications Act + a Heinrich Böll, attacked by the German press for his Nobel nomination. @booksky.bsky.social

I went on an internet course from work in 1997, they gave us a little book of the internet. We found a site called Banned Books and thought, well might be interesting but instead of de Sade it was more about Winnie the Pooh being banned in iran!

Trust me--this is a banned book that you must read.

Books were banned and burned by Nazis during WW2.

Books should never be banned in a democratic country, where people have the freedom to read whatever they choose. #BannedBookWeek, #Rights, #Freedom, #Books 📚

It’s #BannedBookWeek! My current read is The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K Le Guin. The book has been banned & challenged due to graphic description of violence, including rape & slavery. It won the 1973 Hugo Award.

Cover for the book The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K Le Guin. Winner of the Hugo Award. The image is a view from high above the tree tops of a green forest. You can see the curve of the planet and the light blue of the atmosphere fading into the darkness of space. There is a quote at the top of the cover under the authors name.

“Le Guin writes in quiet, straightforward sentences about people who feel they are being torn apart by massive forces in society —technological, political, economic—and who fight courageously to remain whole.” — The New York Times Book Review

#Heliruna isn't on the #BannedBookWeek official list, but it certainly could be. While reading works by long dead authors is great, reading brand new releases by queer authors that They WANT to ban is arguably a better way to stick it to the man.
If you like lesbian horror, try this.

The cover of 'Heliruna' by Hazel E. Baumgartner. The title is in green in a medieval looking font, with a grey picture of standing stones fading into the fog. At the top of the book cover is an endorsement quote which reads, "The scariest goddamn thing I've ever read!" ~ Echo Porter
